Question re Chrome stability in Win 11

Hi everyone. :)

Just a bit of a general question from curiosity...

We've been stuck on outdated Win7 and 8.1 for so long, only recently transitioning to Windows 11. I can't really recall any stability issues with Chrome when I used it in the past on the older computers. Is it still basically like that nowadays, largely stable, with Win 11? Or have there been any problems with Chrome being buggy with Win 11? If there have been problems, do some people disable Chrome updates in order to keep it on a stable version and not auto-updating all the time? (kind of like how people do that with Win 11 23h2 to prevent the system from upgrading itself to 24h2)

I don’t use it much but I do have it installed.

You should be fine. Regardless, removing Chrome is as easy as installing it. I haven’t read any real troubling complaints.
See if there is anything troubling

Windows 11 23H2 comes with Microsoft Edge pre-installed and believe it or not
Microsoft Edge works very well and its not very often i praise Microsoft.

maybe worthwhile giving Edge a go and if you don't like it or get on with it
install Google Chrome.

Chrome stability was poor up to around the version 4.0 but that was more than a decade ago, ancient history.

You may just as well use Edge as Chrome is very similar. On Windows 11 (24H2 is stable). I just use Edge for that reason, Chrome is just extra bloat.

That is very wrong information on both counts, Browsers and versions of Windows 11. You are vastly overthinking, reading too much internet misinformation.

Edge/Chrome updates are quite frequent and any problems are fixed swiftly.

What do you mean my "stable"? What kind of issues are you looking for? Personally, I have never seen Chrome crash. I have been using a mix of Firefox and Chrome to verify my web site, for the past 20 years. Chrome is very good for debugging HTML/Javascript (Developer tools).

Wow. You have been stuck in the stone age for a long time. I updated to Window 10 from Windows 7 about 10 years ago, when Windows 10 first became available. Although, I still have a SubNote Laptop that runs Windows 3.1 (40 MB hard drive!!). The internal battery charger burned up, but it runs fine from the external power adapter. I have a ethernet adapter for it, but never had the need to connect to the internet. I keep it around because it has a Morse Code send/receive interface that I wrote in C.

As for 24H2, don't believe everything you read on the internet. I am running the latest version of Windows 11 (24H2 OS Build 26100.3915) and have been using Chrome (currently Version 135.0.7049.115) for many years. I have Chrome running every day and have never had any issues. A couple of Chrome updates ago, they disabled a few of my extensions. But that was easily fixed. Chrome does get a lot of updates. It seems like, every time I look at the version, an update is available. However, I don't bother updating Chrome until I get a Windows 11 update and reboot.

Indeed, I have not seen browsers or OS crashes in decades. They are mostly related to AV, drivers, or faulty hardware.

Not a Chrome user myself, but I can tell you I have thousands of devices to look after, and on about 75% of those, the browser people use most is Chrome. I don't think that would be the case if it stunk.

In addition to the posts above, I would say that not only is it okay to update Chrome (or whatever you use), but you should. Your browser is your connection to the wild and woolly Internet. Keep it updated, disable/remove extensions you no longer need, and be careful out there.

Thanks everyone for your comments. (Sorry for the delay in responding. Fell a bit under the weather yesterday after I posted.)

Yeah, I haven't had any problems with Chrome myself before. But while I was trying to learn various things this past month or so, I had noticed many people saying how Chrome wasn't working right for them or that it was crashing on them. Given how I had also seen many people talk about Win 11 problems (specifically with 24h2), and all the increase with malware and stuff nowadays, then I was curious if the stability/'strength' of Chrome was a bit less nowadays or just as good as what I was used to. Because I could imagine it might be challenging for Chrome in some ways if it's installed on a buggy 24h2 (before the patches came out to fix things) or if it's under pressure from a lot more tricky malware stuff...

Not sure if I worded that quite right, but anyway, I was just curious, is all. I'm still quite a greenhorn to all things tech and don't really know how it all works or how interactions between different kinds of software may or may not create stability challenges. I sure don't envy the people who have to create and maintain these big products/services like operating systems and browsers. They must be kept hopping on their toes all the time, with so much to deal with. I was reading a bit more the last few days, wound up down a bit of a rabbit hole on a tech news site where, my goodness, they had SO many articles about this and that and the other malware problems, all written just within the last year. Oy yoy.

We lead a very quiet simple life here, with family circumstances (very intense health challenges) that have prevented us from being able to keep abreast of all the changes that have been going on, let alone understand everything easily or right away. Been on the same XP/7/8.1 since they came out, til recently.

Encryption, ...smartphones, ...3/4/5G/fiber internet, ...AI, ...deep fake, ..computers talking to people in their homes and controlling the appliances/lights/heat, ...virtual and remote stuff, ...those wild big white thingies some people have been wearing over their eyes to see their computer stuff while they're walking around (I forget what they're called), ...electric cars, driverless cars, even flying car prototypes now?.... just... wow... SO much is different now. And it seems like it has happened SO fast.

I've had moments this past month or so where I've felt as if I'd been deep down in some underground bunker the past 15+ years. Or in suspended animation sometimes, in some ways. It's like I'm only now finally getting the chance to come out of it for a little breather, and I'm standing in the light, blinking in stunned amazement by how vastly everything has changed in the world around me... (listen to me, I sound like I'm 100 years old or something when I'm barely even half that. lol!) But it is quite an adjustment, trying to bring oneself a bit more into the 'modern age'.

@Helmut I wasn't overthinking or getting into misinformation. I was simply curious and interested to learn. I haven't known what the track record has been for Chrome for the last many years. It's nice to hear that things are going good with it and that it's handling the challenges well.

The "more than a decade ago, ancient history" you spoke of, that's not ancient history for me. It feels like only just a year or so ago. lol. I guess you're one of the speedy rabbits in this journey of keeping pace with the world, whereas I'm not even a turtle right now. More like a snail on crutches, just trying to grow legs. hehe.

Well here's the thing: take it easy on yourself. Even if you hadn't been in an underground bunker, there's a lot to understand and take in. Kind of like I was explaining to my kid the other day that learning history must be more difficult now compared to when I was her age, because more things have happened since then. :)

I've been in IT and software development since the year had a 19 at the beginning. I know a lot about a couple of specific areas, and a little bit about a lot of areas. In no way do I know everything or ever even think I will. Can't be done.

So, just do the best you can. Don't bother comparing yourself to anyone else's knowledge or skills. The only person you need to be better than is yesterday you.
