A couple of notable mentions regarding Dan:
Dan, may have been able to speak Ancient Geek, but could possibly also speak Ancient Greek
During the 50s and 60s — Dan graduated from High School in ‘58, graduated from college in ’63, graduated from grad school in ’65, Africa where he lived and worked in Sierra Leone, W. Africa between '65-67.
Dan received his first Professorship (Linguistics) also in West Africa, I believe between ‘65-67 and spent about two years living & working in China during ‘85-86/7
Dan could speak French, was fluent in two dialects of Chinese, could speak West African Krio, South African Xhosa, American Indian Papago, and Mexican Spanish. When Dan was in grad school he acquired a reading knowledge of Greek, Russian, German, and Syrian Arabic.
Dan loved having a correspondent in Australia, so much that he started buying Australian wine, which we are pretty good at.
He was always telling me how he appreciated our cross-country relationship which was nice, I certainly appreciated his..
There is more but some more likely a little private.
I'd guess he'd be smiling upon us all from that great big ancient DOS cloud in the sky.
Cheers
