Real dogs dinner to get (IMAP) gmail added to outlook

Hi folks
Why on earth is it a real dogs dinner to get a gmail IMAP account added to outlook - currently without zillions of get arounds it seems only Outlook LTSC 2024 and Outlook/365 can do it.

First there's the really poor documentation on GMAIL itself on how to enable IMAP and all sorts of hoops and whistles via "2 level validification" -- then there's a zillion things about "enabling apps" without the slightest help of what this means and how to actually do it !!

Finally though once it's done you can then use the gmail smpt server to SEND emails from your standard account(s) when your isp won't allow the use of their server when say you are travelling etc and insist you use some type of web mail which is usually pretty horrible.

Outlook pre 2024 to use IMAP can be done but you have to disable secure boot in your machines BIOS.

I use Outlook 2021. I have not had to disable secure boot. Once I finally understood how to do it, ever since installing one has been a breeze.

Google's instructions are incorrect (actually incomplete) regarding how to obtain app password. They do not list correctly how to get your app password.
(my step 6 below)

From within your gmail account on the web

1. In the top right, click Gear Icon. Select See all settings.
2. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
3. Imap should be on by default. If you want to use imap and it doesn’t work, turn it on here.
4. At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.
5. Click 9 dots in upper right corner and select ACCOUNT from list of apps
6. Security tab – Make sure 2-step verification is on. Once it is “APP Password” may show underneath it. If it does, generate a password to use in whatever mail app you are going to use. If it does not go here to generate a 16 digit password for your mail app. Get app passwords

That might be your experience, it certainly isn't mine.

Never heard of or experienced that.

I’ve never had a problem. IMAP is set in Gmail and Authentication app is added to my Gmail Account. I actually use Microsoft Authenticator with Gmail.


Outlook 2016 and newer versions, as well as Office 365, “Should” support Modern Authentication (Oauth2) by default.
When helping people, I find that it’s the settings on Gmails end, not Outlooks end that is the cause of Dogs Dinners.

Oddly I've had no issues installing Gmail accounts in Outlook 2021 and 2016.

I'm getting THIS on outlook 2019



I suspect it might be something to do with "App password"

I'm confused by your STEP 6 -- what exactly should I do -- the email is outlook in office 2019.

On another system with office 2024 LTSC it just works !!! but I need office 2019 on this system (publisher -- as it's been removed from Office 2024 LTSC).

I was addressing the 2 statements above. Ofc2021 is pre Ofc2024 and it does work without disabling secure boot.. Also , you did not mention in your original post you were using 2019.


Also, you did get another app password from Google for this device, didn't you? Each device must have it's own app password.

My mistake -- It DOES seem as if LTSC 2021 will work but 2019 ?? probably not.

I've got a "cheapo" office 2021 with publisher on it so I'll try that instead on that machine. Will try tomorrow -- (Mon)

I would suggest that you remove your current office installation before installing the new one.
