Replace failing SSD

The SSD in my HP tp01-1026 is reporting 0% reliability. So.. from a lot of reading it needs to be replaced.
I'm looking at this SSD - Office Depot
Is that a good SSD ?
I'm hoping that I can just clone the dying one.. stick the on in.. but then what ?
The new drive won't have the OS Win11 22h2 so how to I get the cloned copy of the old drive onto the new drive. I plan on cloning to a USB Stick.
Once the new drive is in can I boot to the USB drive clone then clone it to new drive ?
I'm feeling sort of over my head at this point.
I have already created from the media creation tool, but I think that will only install the OS.
I have also use Macrium to create daily image files, and a monthly full image. (not sure how to use those however).

Any tips welcome.

Please make a free backup image and restore the image to a clean installed Windows 11.



Checking the status of the HP hardware (drive(s)) can be performed using the HP UEFI hardware diagnostics.
The tool can run overnight while sleeping.

Download > plan to run overnight > power on the computer and repetitively click F2 of F10 > system > extensive > loop until error > the next day > click esc > take pictures > post images or share links into this thread > run component tests as needed





A quick method to view some replacement options is to use the Crucial scanner:

Cloning is the process used to transfer the OS from the old Drive to the new drive. This is achieved by either fitting the new drive into the system or , when this is not possible , you need to mount the new drive externally and thein swap the two drives,

Cloning produces an exact copy of the original drive including the hidden system files so the cloned drive will boot normally and also recognise the hardware natively as it has all the drivers installed exactly as the original drive

One path:

If you're a Macrium Reflect (Free?) user, you first step should be to create a USB rescue drive (thumb drive). I have one: about 750MB of space is used on it.

Then see if you can boot the laptop from it. That will be needed to restore an image.

Image the SSD to an USB drive.

Swap in the new NVME SSD.

Boot from the Macrium Reflect rescue drive. Restore the image from the USB drive.

If the new NVME drive is larger than the old one, you may need to adjust the partitions after the restore.

Another path:

Purchase an inexpensive external NVME drive enclosure, like this one. You could then clone your internal NVME drive to it directly.

attached pics show fails right off the bat... on the SSD, I can try later tonight to run the 'full' extended test if needed.

The HP hardware diagnostics have confirmed the failure.
Running the HP UEFI hardware diagnostics will stop with the first failure.
After replacing the drive it can be restarted to check the rest of the computer hardware.

The HD Sentinel software produces instantaneous results.
For comparison purposes post images of it's failure report (Overview, Temperature, SMART)

WD blue has a good reputation and high ratings. For the price, it's a great buy.

Ok, I sucessfully cloned the SSD to Sandisk thumb-drive, and booted OK to the USB stick.
Now... when I get the new SSD and get it installed will the BIOS detect the new drive or is there something I will need to do.
Plan at the moment is the install the new SSD, boot to the Thumb-drive then clone from it onto the new SSD.

Suggestions - comments >?

Initialization of a new disk if necessary can be performed using:
a) disk management
b) administrative command prompt
c) administrative powershell

a) disk management is a right click then initialize


b) Open administrative command prompt or administrative powershell and type:

diskpart
lis dis
sel dis W (change the letter W to the applicable disk #)
convert gpt


c) Open administrative powershell and type:

get-disk
initialize-disk W (change the drive letter W to the disk number for the partition style RAW disk)

That situation had not been encountered.

In case it is needed a bootable Windows Media Creation Tool (MCT) (Windows 10 iso) could be booted.

It has Windows RE > troubleshoot > command prompt > type

diskpart
lis dis
sel dis W (change the letter W to the applicable disk #)
convert gpt


Alternatively you could clean install Windows 10 and restore only the data or C: partition.

You said you booted from the usb stick. You didnt say how you did the clone, but presumably you can access the cmd prompt ( if needed ) when booted from the usb stick.

Ahh yes... OK thanks. Will be heading to store soon , hopefully they have what I want in stock.

or there is this wd sn570 , for a budget disk it is quick for many things, but has no dram and is not as quick as the older 550 for large copying. She says the first 15gb copies quickly, then the speed drops dramatically.

Just checking in. Ended up with the WD Blue 570 (they were out of the 550)
My Sandisk clone booted fine under the old drive, but would not start up at all after I put the new SSD in, what a hassle teeen-tiny screw.
Ended up using the MCT (Microsoft create tool) and just reinstalled Win11.
Took some time fighting to get it activated, then do all the updates.
Now having the 'fun' of re-installing all my apps. Very slow going.
Had fight getting Office 2021 activated, but finally got it, now trying to see if I can use the old .pst file in Outlook.

Turning into a long day. I'm the type that once a project/problem comes up I don't sleep well, been up since 3AM.

Tip from a non-Pro: Don't use Sandisk as a clone, and found out after several hours of trying to create the MCT , it would not recognize
the Sandisk at all. Some research on web I found others had issues with Sandisk. Got a Lexar this morning, created the MCT fine.

Ok , back to beating my head. I want to say THANKS for the help/tips and encouragement. This is a fist for me in all my years of
computing to replace a hard and do a Clean Install. (not the first time having to re-install all my apps, since in past I just got a new PC.)

Strange. Sandisk is owned by WDC.

I had no issues with my WDC NVME drive. It'd be disappointing if their other label wasn't as good.

I may be the only one who doesn't recommend cloning. I have never had a cloned drive boot without having to do a boot repair, what works for me is doing a system image then doing a system restore to the new drive.

I guess I regard that as a form of cloning.

Direct cloning (drive to drive, without making an image) have worked for me. I don't recall how my last cloning was done. It may have involved imaging with restoration to the new drive, as I'd make the image first anyway.

Nope. No cloning for me either. I know a clone is supposed to be a direct copy but I've done it twice and had issues both times. I've also restored a Macrium image to a new disk twice and had no issues. In another thread I saw another regular member who did not do it either (don't remember who) so there are at least 3 people in the world who don't clone.

Have almost got all my apps re-installed/configured. Just realized that when I put the new drive in and used MCT to re-install windows that it did not create a 'Rescue Partition' . There is a 100mb EFI system partition and a large 460gb NTFS 'C' drive.
I was reading about creating a rescue partition and it was noted in the article that Maricum can create a rescue partition under the 'other' tab.
I'm a bit hesitant as I don't want to 'undo' all I've done re-installing/setting up my apps.
I was always under the impression that you had to partition first then install, but perhaps my perceptions are wrong.
Can someone please advise ? Maybe I don't need a 'Rescue Part' since I have a MCT.
