RIP Sir Garfield Sobers

The legendary West Indian cricketer Sir Garfield Sobers has died aged 89.

He was a boyhood hero and was the first recorded cricketer in professional cricket to score 6 sixes in a single over in 1968.

Surprisingly only a few people have done that since.

He was a true gentleman of sport loved by his native West Indies (Barbados) and "adopted" UK supporters.

Anybody who knew him liked and respected him. I played Sheffield Shield cricket with him in Adelaide South Australia way back when. He set a record then which will probably never be broken, scoring over 1000 runs and taking more then 50 wickets in a season. He liked a drink after a game, and later too, always up for a chat and we team mates went out to the night spots with him at the time. We were young, fit and frisky looking for a belly full of grog, grab a "sheila" and have a generally good time. Gary never left alone, the girls loved him!!! I caught up with a couple of players from that era only yesterday and we went back to one of the old pubs we used to frequent together and had a few in Gary's memory. A top bloke, sorely missed.
