Samsung Magician 7.2.1 - firmware updates

I have 500GB Samsung 980 Pro SSD, while it is not the troublesome 2TB version, I have been recomended to update to latest firmware via Samsung Magician.

Downloaded and install 7.2.1 and it successfully completed the scan and shows the various SSDs.

But when I check the Update page for firmware updates it says everything is up to date. Given what I have been recommended to do, the 500GB 980 Pro is in fact not at the latest version and should be updated.

Samsung Magician is set to NOT auto start as startup.

What do I need to do so that Samsung Magician will show firmware updates so I can execute them and get my SSDs up to date?

I am running Win 11 Pro 22H2 Build 22621.1265.

Please let me know?

What brings you to that conclusion? I have the exact same drive and this is the latest firmware.

Samsung Magician shows 3B2QGXA7 for the 980 PRO 500GB. It says "You are currently running the latest version of Firmware".

It does not give me the option to upgrade the firmware to 5B2QGXA7 like you have done!

I don't understand why Magician just says everything is up to date when it obviously is not.

Is there some firewall setting that needs to be in place so Magician can identify updates?

The PC has a static IP address with the gateway and DNS set to the modem. I tried clicking on ChatBot in Magician and it said check network connection. This is really weird as all other network access works fine!

It does not give me the option to upgrade the firmware to 5B2QGXA7 like you have done!

I didn't need to update mine, it came with the latest firmware. Not sure why Samsung Magician isn't showing a update for you.

There is another option. Backup all data on drive before proceeding!

Thanks for your suggestion but that looks like a really risky way to update the firmware. It could wipe my boot drive and possibly brick my 980 pro!

I even tried installing Magician (7.0.1 older version) on my Surface (which connects via DHCP not a static IP address), but it showed everything was up to date including Magician itself (which is incorrect). So, nothing to do with how my devices connect to the LAN!

I have had this 980 Pro 500GB running fine for almost 11 months now without any issues and I understand that the problem impacts the 2TB version (understand Samsung is covering their butt recommending upgrading all versions of the 980 Pro)!

Wonder if it is a problem on the Samsung end that is stopping updates being found?

If you're using Defender as AV then allow Magician through Controlled Folder Access in case Defender is blocking it.
Go to- Virus & threat protection -Controller folder access/Manage Controlled folder access -allow an App through Controlled folder access -Add an allowed app -browse all Apps.

In the address bar paste C:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung\Samsung Magician

Find and select SamsungMagician.exe and allow.

Repeat for SamsungMagicianSVC.exe

Close Defender. Set Magician to run at startup. Reboot the computer. See if that works.

Dang! Y'all have just made me glad that I've never bought a Samsung SSD.
And, now I never will.

I did buy a PNY as my first SSD, and it failed in just one month. PNY refused to replace it or give me any help at all. Now they too are on my Sh** List.

Thanks for the warning!

Hi Fabler2, thanks for the tip. I tried it but doesn't fix. I even disabled anything on Windows Security and still no update coming in.

I've known about the firmware problem with larger Samsung drives but only yesterday did I check to see that my 500GB 980 Pro is also vulnerable. I had the same problem with Magician showing the latest version is already installed. What I did to solve this was signed in to my actual Administrator account. Being signed in to my regular account and simply right clicking on Magician and selecting Run as Administrator did not work to update the firmware. Since Magician was not installed in my Administrator account I installed it, then ran it from there and unlike while signed in to the regular account which showed no update being needed, in the Administrator account Magician immediately showed an update was available for both drives (500GB 980 Pro and regular 1TB 980) and it was successful installing them, one at a time.
