Windows 11 Pro 22H2 (OS Build 22621.1778)
I have my main laptop running Windows 11 (an upgrade from Windows 10) and the machine is beginning to slow down to a point where it is becoming very annoying. I have tried trimming the start up apps to a minimum. run the DISM Restore Health command and have swept it for any malware (none found) . Now when I look in that task manager I find that Edge is taking up a lot of resources - see pic what I would like to know is would that many references to Edge have any effect on the speed of the machine (an Asus Vivobook Pro with an i7 10th gen CPU) plus any other ideas on why the machine is so slow to boot and move between tabs etc> Any help really appreciated.

To find out which resource is overloaded, in the left pane of task manager click on "processes". In the right columns the percentage of use should tell you if your slow performance is due to either high memory, cpu, or disk. If any of the columns jump to 100%, something is overworking that component. You can narrow it down more by clicking on the top of each column which sorts that particular column by highest users first.

See my screenshot. This is with one FF windows open and one Edge window open. With me doing basically nothing, I'm using 8 gb of my 32 gb ram. I can open another Edge tab and my ram jumps to 8.7.

Perform a clean boot to eliminate software conflict causing the issue. If your problem doesn't happen in a clean boot state, you have some software conflicting with Windows. Brink's procedure of process of elimination will help you weed out which one. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Tutorial

Hiyya glassskuter see the shot of my task manager as you said and the only thing I can find is that Edge is running 19 entries and the memory is 37% would this be the cause of the slow down?? I meant to add that I have 16GB of RAM on this machine.TASKMG2.jpg

That screenshot of task manager looks normal. These days it's normal for modern browsers to run a ton of processes. If you look at my screenshot, FF runs more processes than Edge. When you say "slowing laptop" are you talking about just your browsing experience being slow, or is it slow when doing all tasks? It makes a difference in how to troubleshoot the problem.
If it's just your browsing:
1. Disable extensions
2. check your internet speed Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test
3. Run network troubleshooter. Settings>System>troubleshoot>other troubleshooter> Internet Connections. Also Network adapter.
3. Try resetting your network adapters. Reset Network Adapters in Windows 11 Tutorial
4. If you use a VPN turn it off
5. Try alternate browser

If it's your entire computing experience being slow, process of elimination is the only way to try to figure out what's causing it.

Here are things to try.
1. sfc /scannnow from cmd as admin
2. clean boot -People don't use this tool enough. I highly suggest it.
3. Test using safe boot with networking.
3. repair install

Regarding slow boot, more information describing your startup issue would be helpful. Are you referring to time from a restart or a cold boot? If it cold boot, try turning off fast startup to see if it makes a difference. If it's already disabled, try enabling it. It's not waking from sleep is it? If restoring from sleep is involved that will open up the can of worms that is modern standby.

Dang, that sounds like just one of over a thousand service calls I've taken on PC's, laptops specifically, over the years. I'd make a few tweaks, that should have been done on day one, but never were.
Then I'd delete a few million garbage files and LO and Behold, the little lappy would be running better than when it was new. Nothing new, same old crap, just a different day.

We've been talking about cleaning the garbage out of a PC, on several different threads, for months.
Don't people ever read those topics?

News Flash: Edge creates tons of little garbage files, every day. Not only Temporary Internet Files, but hundreds of .old files as well.
Clean out the temp files by entering this command line at a CMD prompt, or in a batch file:
del /F /S /Q "C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Cache\."

And then, you can clean out all those .old files with this little command: (also run from a CMD prompt, not a Terminal or Power Shell prompt)

del /F /S /Q "C:\*.old"

These are just two out of twelve, or more, commands that run in my Cleanup.bat program, (batch file) that I run almost every day, to keep my PC running smoothly. OH, and don't forget #13, to empty the Recycle Bin.

It must be working, because my Win-11/Pro/64 runs just great on my OLD PC.

Happy Mother's Day, Mates!
TM

Thanks for all the replies now it seems that my machine is slow for a variety of issues and yes I have run sfc and the DISM - Restore Health commands and thy all come back as nil problems. Now while I can understand the slow net speed - at best 50mbs download the problem lies with the cold boot each day and the slowness in the machine in loading apps when the machine was new it was absolutely flying along. I shall have to work through some of the recent replies and see if they do something to speed it up a little. The machine was origianlly loaded with Windows 10 and I upgraded it to Windows 11 and I am wondering if that has any bearing on the issue?

Run Disk Cleanup "with" the Clean up system files option and this...

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

Then you should probably also clean the cache and cookies in your browsers. :-)

If you run these three things every day or two... your computer will run a lot better.
Me... I just do the first two, and I use CCleaner v5.78 as well.

CCleaner v5.78...

Scans clean locally and at Virustotal.com

Note: I block these three files in the firewall, to keep CCleaner from updating...

And I add these lines to my HOSTS (open with notepad), file for the same reason...

@ICIT2LOL . I use EDGE (normal version) as my default browser and it doesn't show as a startup App. Sixth gen CPU and no slowdowns. Don't know if this has any bearing on it.

I upgraded it to Windows 11 and I am wondering if that has any bearing on the issue?
Folks here will disagree with me on this as many have systems that have gone through multiple upgrades and work fine. I feel the success of an upgrade depends on how clean a system is going into the upgrade. I look at it this way. Whatever junk might be lingering around in an old OS both in a user account, installed apps, and the registry might not affect the operation of that OS all that much. But it could affect the new OS when the system is upgraded. When in doubt, a clean install is always better.
By the way, are you running the latest UEFI bios version from Asus? Are you overclocking? It appears you have your cpu listed incorrectly in your specs. There is no such thing as
i7 -10510U that I could find.
A 10th generation i7 should be something like 107xxx.
A 10th generation i5 would be something like 105xxx.

I had to search for Intel 10510U ...to find it.
If I added the i7... it didn't pop up in the results. Go figure. :/
Must be that new fangled AI cr*p they added to the search.

I still remember when Google search... just worked properly. LOL

Ok glasskuter I have been doing some of the suggestions and it seems to be alittle faster than before although I still think it could be better.
