Snipping Tool does not work on admin apps

If the active window is a program that runs as admin,the Snipping Tool does not work
This is normal behavior in windows(not the Snipping Tool specifically)but because of this,I cannot use it everywhere

Any solution to that,or should I ignore it and go back to using my ShareX while I was using Windows 10 on my old laptop

For clarity can you give an example of an admin app? I'd like to try what you're saying.

Any app(games usually run as admin)

For example run notepad as admin and press Print Screen to take a screenshot
Nothing will happen

Create a shortcut with this target and use it for those situations.

I use WinKey+Shift+S to invoke the Snipping tool, no problem with an 'admin' Notepad...



The problem is not that you cannot snip the 'admin' Notepad. It is just that while the window for the admin app in question has focus you cannot invoke the Snipping Tool by pressing PrtScr. This seems to be a bug. Try clicking on the taskbar to shift the focus, you'll find that PrtScr now works. Alternatively use WinKey+Shift+S as I do, that always works.

Not the case here, I'm on an Admin Account and installed the game.
The Snipping tool works on the one game I tried. I used PrtSc, but could also Alt Tab out and use the Snipping Tool, Alt Tab back in etc.

How about trying the Game Bar which is now integrated in Windows 11.
Settings > Gaming > Captures.
Pause video snip and take a shot, whatever.

My Print Screen key is bound to Snagit so when I Print Screen Snagit opens fine. This was with both Notepad and Terminal opened in admin mode.

If I clicked on the Snip tool, it opened without issue.

They're not talking admin account privileges.

That said, I'm still not clear the issue as I couldn't duplicate it, also I have Snagit bound to Print Screen and no issues there.

@Bree yes that seems to be the case,I can use it with Win+Shift+S but not with print screen

Is SnagIt running as admin
If I set a hotkey to an app that is running as admin,that hotkey WILL work on other programs that are working as admin

Actually, not 100% sure it does run as elevated or not as Snagit is really two processes SnagitCapture.exe and SnagPriv.exe, the SnagPriv.exe runs on UIAccess while SnagitCapture.exe does not. Both processes will always start if you kill or restart the SnagitCapture.exe process. SnagitEditor.exe is for the SnagitEditor itself.

Atleast according to Microsoft:

"UIAccess integrity allows an application to bypass User Interface Privilege Isolation (UIPI) restrictions when an application is elevated in privilege from a standard user to an administrator." so it appears it is elevated silently without doing the standard UAC prompt.

The way I view it is I DO NOT have to right click and click Run as administrator to get it to run. Simply clicking the icon or hitting Print Screen runs the app without such a need. Perhaps you have a different view of Run as administrator

We are talking about two different things. What I was saying was you answered the question "Is SnagIt running as admin" and you said "No because it doesn't need it." but in reality, it is running as admin because of the SnagPriv.exe which elevates everything because of UIAccess so just because it doesn't prompt for UAC to run as Administrator, it actually runs already as Adminstrator, just that you don't know about it unless you check. I was always wondering what the SnagPriv.exe was for as it's on XP, 10, and 11. The question is, is Snagit running as Administrator and it is, it's not asking if you are manually running as Administrator by right clicking or if it showed the UAC prompt on it's own but when you run Snagit.exe, it also launches SnagPriv.exe. Mines autostarts when I login to Windows so it will already be in the system tray on it's own. So regardless, Snagit already is running as Administrator on the system which is why Print Screens runs the app and can capture things even if they are Admin level processes which was what the OP was asking. So it already has elevated access without you knowing about it or ask for your approval unlike the apps that either has the shield which will prompt UAC on it's own or when you right click and Run As Administrator, they all end up running with elevated privileges which is what matters.




I only remembered UIAccess because HWInfo added a OSD feature and it will run without having to manually do the UAC which is explained by Microsoft here:

It was "run as Administrator". I have double checked. My points still stand.

Snipping Tool is still lame!!!

I have experienced a few times when the system runs out of resources (32GB RAM) with Snagit where using Snagit with the mouse to start the capture will work but the Print Screen key does not do anything. SnagitCapture.exe is still running but SnagPriv.exe is no longer running as a process. So when I start the SnagPriv.exe process manually, the Print Screen key works again. SnagPriv.exe basically is what allows SnagIt to use the Print Screen key as it gives the elevated access without the user's approval due to UIAccess to Snagit which is SnagitCapture.exe to do the screenshots with Print Screen as the short cut key. So if you want the Print Screen to not work, all you have to do is kill the SnagPriv.exe process but leave the SnagitCapture.exe process running.
