Some fonts don't display correctly on my Win11 desktop

I'm using 22H2 Build 22621.1992 with 16gb ram and i5 processor on 2.92 GHz on Gigabyte motherboard.

recently I uninstalled a few useless looking fonts from my OS. Now some characters (some bullet characters specifically) don't dispaly well in my MS Word (instead small rectangular boxes dispaly). Earlier explorer tabs' close buttons also displayed similar, but when I found a list of default windows fonts here, they got reinstated, but MS Word bullets still don't display.

I've some 600 fonts installed in my windows. To repeat, I've carefully scanned the list of default windows fonts, and installed them all thru Font Navigator and High Logic Main Type fonts managers.

I've reset default fonts settings from Control Panel> Fonts> Font Settings.

I've also ran these commands in Admin Command Prompt successfully, without any error:
Code:
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Welcome to the forum.
First is there a reason you haven't upgraded to 23h2?

I would first rebuild the font cache. Rebuild Font Cache in Windows 11 Tutorial

If that doesn't work, In Word, does the issue occur when using a native Windows font or just when using a font you have installed?
All Windows fonts are stored in the C:\Windows\Fonts folder.
When using Install, fonts you've installed go into C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Fonts rather than c:\Windows\fonts.

I didn't upgrade because I don't upgrade often/as they come along. Because they do change some functionality. I would upgrade if that is the only way to cure some issue (as this is right now, i.e. not upgrading is causing some issue).
2. I used your bat tool/file to rebuild font cache, and ran it as an admin, it didn't show any positive or negative error msg and seem to have completed in a moment (dos window flashed and closed).
3. I'm using native window font in MS Word. And moreover, the problem isn't in the body text matter. It is in the automatic-used-bullets (when we collapse some paragraphs/headings in MS word, they show with a bullet character, but we can't change or view that bullet character font, its programmed in word at backend).
4. Fonts go here (C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Fonts ) that's a new for me, but I don't think I can find out the problem there.

Pls guide me.

FYI 22h will no longer be supported after October 8, 2024.
I'm not an advanced user in Word. I know just enough to get by. Here's a few more questions and a few ideas..
1. Is it one font or all fonts?
2. Are you using a language pack other than English? If so try English or another language to see if it's doing the same thing. This would rule out it being a corrupted language pack.
3. What version of Word do you use?
4. Have you tried a different pre-defined bullet or tried defining a new bullet? Both options are under Home>paragraph>bullets>define new bullet.
5. Have you tried creating a new test user accout to see if the issue occurs? This would rule out a problem in your user account.
6. A longshot, but you might do a clean boot to make sure no other software is conflicting and causing the issue. If it doesn't happen in a clean boot, you have some software conflicting with Windows. Brink's procedure will help you weed out which one. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Tutorial

That's about all my meager Word knowledge can come up with right now. If you are using Office365 or Office 2021, you can contact Microsoft. Their Office support group is excellent, or at least they have been for me. Contact Us - Microsoft Support

Note: C:\Users\zopfa\AppData\Local\Microsoft just had 'Font Cache' folder, but not 'Fonts'.

1. My guess is that its only one font, because its posing/showing problem at one place only (auto-bullets to paragraphs in Ms Word Ltsc Pro 2021).
2. No language pack is being used, at least not consciously. This problem started when I uninstalled some fonts randomly, thinking that they're putting unnecessary load on my system, when I don't need them so many.
3. I can't change that font or bullet. Because that is just default behaviour of MS word. It shows collapsed paragraphs with these bullet characters.

4. I'd do try logging in with another user with this standalone pc of mine, and also try clear/safe mode.

1. No, we can't change (or view) font name. Its same as we cannot see or change what font is used by 'Windows' to show tab names in windows explorer or in menus etc. Same way, we can't change what font is being used or can't change that font, which is used by word to display the collapsed paragraphs. Still I'll try if it can be done.
2. I've checked thru another, newly created, user also, and behaviour is same.
3. Now only one suggestion is pending, i.e. clean boot/safe mode.

It looks like Segoe UI fonts were replaced or modified by some application. Because these fonts are used throughout Windows, you cannot simply reinstall them while Windows is running. First make sure you download the correct font files or you copy them from the folder C:\Windows\Fonts of another Windows 10/11 installation. Then hold SHIFT and restart. select Troubleshoot and then select Command Prompt. Use the appropriate commands to copy the fonts from the source folder (say C:\temp\fonts) to the C:\Windows\Fonts folder. Replace them when asked. Restart your computer.

Thank you.
I too think that you might be right, as somehow some 5-6 main main fonts which windows requires were mistakenly uninstalled or overwritten by me.

In the mean time I've also uninstalled and reinstalled MS Office, and still the MS Word interface isn't showing that one thing correctly. I.e. this remedy too didn't work.

So I'd implore you one more time, saying that, is this process really neccessary (of running windows in safe mode and then copying the required font file thru dos window? Particularly when I can see thru 2 font utilities (Font Navigator & High Logic Main Type) that all the variations of Segoe font are installed correctly (also inside the word processing programs all fonts are available to be used). So can they not be proper still? Is there any other step left to be checked by us?

And, can you send them some list of windows fonts which are must/required. (Note: I've already installed all the fonts given in this Microsoft List).

I don't think you can do it in safe mode. More likely outside Windows, like booting from a WinPE USB. see Strelec WinPE here: WinPE 10-8 Sergei Strelec English » Sergei Strelec

I would copy the fonts from a working Windows installation and boot with Strelec to copy-paste them in C:\Windows\Fonts

Oh My God! The problem got resolved. By this 11 Forums thread.

  1. What I did was first replaced Segoe default font with Arial Bold font (thru the Reg tool file provided by the said forum thread).
  2. Rebooted.
  3. Reversed the process, i.e. 'Restored Default System Font Back' by the reg tool file given. [This is the step which seems to have fixed all default font bindings and cured my system font display errors].
  4. Reboot.
  5. I was made happy.

I remember having a similar issue when I tried to copy/paste fonts from another Windows system, so I had as more as possible. One of them made all the arrows in scrolling bars (and other symbols) appear like small boxes! You can imagine how annoying that was. The cure was to replace Segoe UI and some other fonts outside Windows.
