I'm working on teaching my students Speech Recognition in Windows 10. Since RTM Windows 11 is coming October 5, I'm pretty sure I'll need to know something about Speech in Windows 11.

Has anyone tried setting up Speech Recognition in Windows 11? And if so, how did it go?

I'm up to my armpits in alligators, and just don't have the time for preparing lessons and researching too! Help, please!

Good morning, Ghot. I hadn't heard that one but I'm certainly old enough ...

Got any ideas for me? I have students who've never typed in their lives, some who type so slowly that they're gathering moss, and one who has an old hand injury that doesn't let him type very much because it hurts.

I also have one who has jumped on the Speech bandwagon and has outdistanced his teacher! Two more who need lots of help, but are quite excited.

Sooooo, I need all the help I can get; that is, if it even appears on Windows 11 by the October 5 release.

@Wynona

I wish I did. Last time I played around with speech recognition was in 1997. On an old Apple II... iirc.

I was in the hospital and every night the nurses would open the doors to the rooms to check on the patients.
Drove me crazy. I couldn't get any sleep. But I got my revenge.
They had a rec room that had an ancient Apple II computer, that anyone could play with.

So I wrote a little program.

I made the screen black and the text black. Then ran a "loop" that every 5 minutes would "say"... "I am alive".
Right before we all went to bed for the night... I started the program, and let it run all night.

Because the screen and the text were black... it "looked" like the computer was off.
Drove the nurses crazy. :D

Has anyone tried setting up Speech Recognition in Windows 11? And if so, how did it go?
Hi Wynona. I have recently been working on this very subject for an elderly person - and have put together a starter doc. on the subject.
Happy to share here and hope it will be of use. Should be attached if I've managed to do it right :)

"Your PC does not meet the minimum hardware requirements recommended for windows 11, and there may be issues and bugs that impact your experience."
Good morning, folks.

It looks like I got busy with other things and let this thread go wanting.

However, for the past three weeks or so, I've been researching and teaching my students to use Speech Recognition. And, as the old Cajun said, "Lemme done tole ya!" There are many, many tutorials out there! Some fairly decent, some really bad, and some so old there's no way to make it work with Windows 10.

I am in the process of writing up what works, and how to get there, with screen shots and all. I am taking bits and pieces of what I've learned so far, and putting my own spin on them. Say, if my research finds a well-known way to set up a microphone, I'll incorporate how to do it into my tutorial, but in my own words. I'm not into plagiarizing someone else's work; however, there's no unique way to set up and use Speech Recognition. There are many ways to get where I need to be . . . and that's what I'm researching.

    SuperSpeed USB Type-C
    DVD Writer
Hi Wynona. I have recently been working on this very subject for an elderly person - and have put together a starter doc. on the subject.
Happy to share here and hope it will be of use. Should be attached if I've managed to do it right :)
Thanks, Ashley. A very good tutorial for dictating in Microsoft Word, but not all my students use it. But I'll pass it around to those who do use Word.

Thanks again.

It's very involved, Jeff. I'm learning more and more about Speech Recognition as I proceed. Now I find that I can turn on or off online Speech Recognition! Haven't read the tutorial yet, though. I will have to read before Wednesday.
