hi all I have a cypher G70 pre built PC with a GIGABYTE B660 DS3H DDR4 (rev. 1.0) : LGA1700, DDR4, USB 3.2 motherboard,I have windows pre installed on a ssd and have just got a Samsung 980 NVM M2 internal SSD 1TB, I've installed it in a slot above the graphics card,BUT it's not registering in windows as a new drive! can anyone give me a clue as to where I'm going wrong? the drive is brand new so I'm assuming it's not damaged,I've removed and reseated it but it's just not showing as a new drive!

Is the storage drive detected by BIOS?

Have you checked Disk Management to see you will need to initialize the storage drive you have connected?

If the storage drive not showing in Disk Management then Windows 11 does not detect the storage drive, are you sure you connected correctly?

ok quick update, found disk management and tried again, and I'm getting this screen, I'm assuming it's the new drive, now I don't want it as anything to do with windows,ie installing it on there or booting from, so I assume I would choose GUID partition?

ok,so tried to intialize and get a error back saying a device which does not exist was specified, that was using the choice of GUID so do I use MBR? and would that interfere with windows booting?

JFYI..... an age old problems with new drives and MS Windows.... Windows can't see the drive until it's been partitioned and formatted. At the very least, 'Partitioned'.
Any drive manager program should be able to see the drive and partition it, then format it NTFS.
Then Windows should be able to see it.

If the storage drive not showing in Disk Management then Windows 11 does not detect the storage drive, are you sure you connected correctly?
That is why i asked if you connect the drive correctly anyhow, good to know problem solved.

You cannot just plug in that drive. On those sockets there is usually a screw/clip on the end to keep
it connected. The only way to put that screw in is to magnetize the screw driver. Been there suffered through it !
Use disk management before and after it is installed to verify the drive.
Looked again , it will be "new Volumn D" Right click on the D and format NTFS and assign a drive letter from the list.

I'm not sure I follow.

The M.2 drive has been completely inserted, and locked in place? (Seems to need a screw. Some motherboards are screwless, using a sort of cam to lock down the drive.)

A new drive may need to be initialized. Then a partition (or partitions) is created. Then the partition is formatted (usually as NTFS).

Wish I had been here sooner to read this. rockyanexp and others repeatedly told this fellow to install the driver, or install IRST. There seemed to be some issue with the OP's communication skills more than that of an issue with the hardware. I would have suggested that they check the NVMe settings in the UEFI as this is a common oversight. Despite what some might think there are some NVMe that will not work in some system boards unless IRST is active. I know that this is an issue with some ASUS system boards but I'm not as familiar with GIGABYTE in that regard. I would always recommend ASUS to clients so most of my builds were ASUS systems. I make no such recommendation anymore because ASUS today is a far cry from what they used to be. To be fair, I am running two GIGABYTE boards on the home front on a regular basis, both builds are by yours truly. GIGABYTE has come a long way. I have no idea what they are like for support because I never needed it.

One more thing: There are some issues with Samsung's 980 NVMe. In fact, many of these have been recently recalled. Also, some system boards simply cannot function with it. This is not a new issue with Samsung NVMe. In fact, I recall having to return a stick after contacting Samsung and being told by them that it would not work on my platform because it was made more specifically for laptops. Always helps to check QVL.

I hope this little tid bit helps any readers in the future.
