Solved Stalls after waking from sleep mode

When I wake my computer up from sleep mode, it boots up fairly quickly for the first 30-40 seconds it responds and I can open and run apps and the internet, but then it suddenly stalls and I can't click anything, everything is frozen for about 30 seconds. It unfreezes and does the same thing about a minute later stalling for 20 seconds. My computer works amazing and is extremely fast after this 3-minute period of working then stalling/freezing.

Does anyone have an idea on what this can be? I have windows updated and have turn on fast startup option checked.

Hi and welcome to the forum. More than likely you are bitten by one of the problems that plagues buyers of new laptops...modern standby.
Please open a command prompt as admin and type powercfg -a Post a screenshot of the results.

Although I highly suspect it to be a modern standby issue (you do use S0 sleep ie: modern standby), I think it would be prudent to first eliminate it being something else causing it. Here's the way I would approach it.

First make sure no system files are corrupted. From command prompt as admin type sfc /scannow

Perform a clean boot to make sure there is no software conflict. Let it sleep in a clean boot state, wake it up to see if the issue persists. If it works correctly in clean boot, you have some software causing the problem. Brinks tutorial can help you narrow it down to which one. Test in safe mode. If it works correctly in safe mode, it would point to a driver. Boot to Safe Mode in Windows 11 Tutorial

Regarding modern standby, your options are limited.

You can check to see if you are one of the few lucky ones who can enable S3 sleep. Not many new laptop UEFI bios allow it. Make sure you have latest bios.

Afterward run another powercfg -a to see if S3 sleep is now an option. If not, I strongly suggest using hibernate rather than sleep. It's not ideal, but it's the best you can do if a device does not have S3 sleep available.

You're welcome. If you do have to resort to using hibernate, you can enable hibernatet using the above tutorial and then actually put it into hibernate using one of these methods. Hibernate Computer in Windows 11 Tutorial

YESSSSS!!!!!You lucky dog. Resume from sleep may be a few seconds longer which is small sacrifice by what you gain from using S3 sleep. In case you do not know S3 sleep is the kind of sleep that we've all been accustomed to since forever.

If you haven't already, restart the computer.

Now make sure Sleep shows in power menu. If it's not, go to control panel>power options>Choose what the power buttons do>Change settings that are currently unavailable>Under Shutdown settings, locate and check the Sleep option if it is not already checked. Click Save changes to add the sleep option to Power Menu.

Now you can go into your power options, make sure Balanced power plan is selected. In the left pane set your options however you want for power button, lid close, sleep after and turning off display. Be sure any save any changes.
EDIT; Turn off fast startup.
Put the laptop to sleep. Wait a minute or so and wake it up to see if you problem is gone. If it's not, we'll have to run through the other troubleshooting steps I listed above. No matter if this fixes it or not, you are in way better state than before. Oh Lord, please let this be the solution to your problem! Let me know. I'm so anxious to find out.

LETS GOOOOOOO! HECK YES! You are amazing wow! Thank you so much.

Just for my knowledge, why did I need to turn off fast startup and use balanced power plan? I see it shows High Performance and Ultimate Performance as options now, what do these settings do?

So are you saying it works correctly now?
why did I need to turn off fast startup
Both hibernate and hybrid sleep use the fast startup feature. With fast startup turned off, the system can not enter hibernate nor hybrid sleep.
Here's my basic understanding how the sleep states work.
If you notice you now have 3 sleep states available to you. S3, hibernate, and hybrid sleep. The more power a sleep state uses, the faster your computer wakes from sleep. Modern Standby(S0) that you disabled uses the most power which gives the device an almost instant on. That concept sounds good, but this state has caused everything from wake issues, battery drain, overheating, network connection problems and more. There have even been reports that laptops have actually caught fire with the lid closed or when carried in an bag. That''s why I call modern standby a plague.

Of the 3 states you now have available, S3 is what I feel is a balanced sleep. Volatile memory is kept refreshed to maintain the system state and it goes into a low power state. Some components remain powered so the computer can wake from input from the keyboard, LAN, or a USB device.

Hibernate(also known as state S4) uses the least amount of power. Hibernation saves the system state into a very large file on your drive named hiberfil.sys. The size of this file is 40% of the amount of your installed ram. (in your case the reserved space for that file would be almost 13 gb)

Hybrid sleep is a special state that's a combination of whatever sleep state is available, (now in your case S3) and hibernation states. A hiberfil.sys file is still used. it uses more power than hibernate but less power than S3. This state is mostly used on desktops.

why did I....use balanced power plan

I suggested that especially for our testing phase because it is the default power plan. The main difference between balanced and high performance and ultimate is the amount of power each uses. If using S3 solved your problem, it's your choice which power plan you want to use. Maybe this article can help you choose what is best for the way you use your system.
