Static IP vs VPN

I have AT&T and the router has a static IP address, is there a way to use a VPN to change the address?

Well a VPN is used to encrypt traffic and tunnel it to an intermediary endpoint. If you're trying to hide your IP then yes a VPN would do that since it will make your activities appear to come from the VPN provider. Be mindful that a VPN provider could potentially harvest info from that interaction and/or the VPN provider could be legally bound to provide details of your activities if required by a government.

No. But you can install VPN software on your PC so the end-points will be aware of your VPN-assigned IP and not your static IP assigned by AT&T.
Do some research on VPN providers.. some do not track/capture or audit usage. Some do.
Most are NOT US based...

Why ask for advice and then contradict a member's reply? A VPN will do what you need. Get a free trial of NordVPN and use whatismyip.com to verify this.

Hi folks
Some VPN's (including Nord VPN) offer an add-on giving you the option of a Static IP from whatever country you want it in --this remains unique to you- and remains constant whenever you logon. This can be desirable in many cases since some services detect "standard VPN usage". A fixed static IP works just as any other IP and problem solved.

I really don't like cloudflare etc for domestic computers - although for service providers and Forums it's great.

VPNs are not really a means to be more secure nor do they completely protect your privacy. Sites/companies can still often track you through site Facebook and Google who horde user data or even by browser profiling.

I took a look at that a few years back.

Edit: The issue is that if the IP can't be changed, your physical location is always known.

I don't recommend Tor, it offers about the same level of protection and anyone can run tor exit nodes. There is a fairly well known APT group that in the past had managed a large number of the exit nodes (somewhere in the 10-25% range) and were/are basically harvesting data.

And that is the problem, all the routers I had before this one could have their IP address changed by restarting them.

A properly configured VPN will change the apparent IP address of the router, not the computer!!
