So this morning I made the mistake of turning on "get updates before they are out early" well windows 24H2 started downloading and installed. So I was waiting for the usual blue screen. It installed and no blue screen, I did have to reinstall a couple small programs to get get them to work. The create a restore point however didn't work, even going to the create the restore point using windows settings didn't seem to work either. So OK I decided to restart. That's when it all went south. Dell fired up the system hardware check first, I never get that, after it was done it said no errors found. (BTW I also ran sfc and disk before restarting, that also said no issues with the system.) so now I'm back to doing a full system backup recovery if 23h2. The question is, what could be the problem here? If 24H2 installed OK, and wasn't giving me any errors what would make it not boot as usual?

Thanks

Without trying to troubleshoot the boot problem, it's hard to say what cause the hardware check on Dell PC.

Can't answer the question, there isn't enough information. I do have a question for you, what are you using for the for the backup restore? If you are using the Windows 11 backup/recovery it can be somewhat iffy.

Not sure how to go about that. But it was weird that after 24H2 was installed and the system restart that way it was OK. It was just after I did a restart is when it went nuts.

Strangely enough, after my restore, I let windows install the preview of net and at the restart it also gave me a blue screen and tried to repair. I'm back to re recovering again. This is really weird stuff.

Thanks

Don't have much else to say, I use AOMEI Backupper. It's the best I've used.

With the information you have provided, I would suggest using the Windows roll back. The process is as follows; To uninstall Windows 11 24H2 and go back to your previous version, open Settings > System > Recovery and click on "Go Back" - this option allows you to revert to the previous version of Windows within a limited timeframe after updating; if "Go Back" is unavailable, you may need to use advanced recovery options to uninstall the update.
Great if I could go back to it. I said all I get is the blue repair screen, it only has the reset option. I don't want to loose my apps. So I use my system backup to restore back to 23h2.

Now I find even the Lousy preview update isn't working. Since this is my main working laptop I can't mess with it too much. If I can't get it right other than recovering, I may just end up having to get another cheap Dell with 24H2 installed and operating.

Thanks

Ok, Yeah, I guess that happens :)

Good grief, I have no idea how the hell all that got in there on my C drive. I never did anything with it myself. Anyway, I'm restored back up to 23h2, and so far I am updating some personnel files and updating some programs. Will do a full system backup after, just to have it updated in case I have to restore yet again. So here's the screenshot.

Until you can figure out what is going on, You might want to pause updates immediately after your restore to keep it from downloading again.

I'm having a hell of a time even getting my backup to take. This is the worst mess I've had with this. I'm restoring the 3rd time. And may end up doing it again using an older backup. Its just insane.

Anyway I'll keep messing with it.

OK, I ended up loosing the ssd altogether after the 4th attempt to restore the backup from my usb external drive. It would even let it install anymore. So luckily I had an installer for 23h3 on a thumb drive 4460, and after installing on another ssd in my system and spending all night reinstalling programs and resetting windows up I'm making a new backup. At least for now I'm back up.

Weird thing is I couldn't really tell which ssd I used, because it didn't show me any drive letter, just 1 or 0 with the size. So I picked 0 with 470 something gig. Now I still see 3 ssd's but one D says local and isn't viewable at all it says can not access. I think that one used to C. But the f I try to format it, it says can not because another program is using it or something like that. Weird stuff.

Anyway, no more 24H2 for me. At least not on this machine. Strange that some get it to work on unsupported hardware. Oh well.

At this point, I'm getting to think that there is something with either this system and or the various drivers being downloaded by windows. After having the unit working, windows download again had a mess of Intel and some odd drivers listed in the windows download, I tried to not download anything except the usual Windows updates. Well, after a restart, I again looked at a blue screen issue. I managed to get back up by having a restore point, and then ran a program to stop downloading drivers. Also ram one to hide selected item. To make it even more locked down, I set the downloads to pause a week. So far, it at least shuts down and restarts without the usual insanity. So either the drivers are not comparable with this system, or Dell hardware is just not right. The other issue is I don't have a Dell warranty, so that Software Dell uses to download doesn't work. I also can't be sure if any of the downloads on their site would work either. It's insane, I have never had this kind of mess to deal with before I made the mistake and ended up with 24H2. Now The only way I can see getting it together is to buy another laptop with 24H2 and have the time to do a better repair on this 7740. This is my main working system.

I did learn that even having full system backups doesn't always solve your problems.

Thanks for any information on this.

This is why I disable driver updates with windows Enable or Disable Include Drivers with Windows Updates in Windows 11

You do not have to have a warranty and it does work. Go to Dell, enter your service tab, , in the dropdown change OS from windows 10 to windows 11. Click drivers, Find Dell Command Update in the list and install it. It's under systems management.
Have done that, but it was too late for 24

Have downloaded that a few times but all it does is spin and says can not whatever. So gave up on that too.

As soon as I find a viable decent laptop on eBay to redo everything I'll have time to remove the SSD's and pull out this D drive that seems to somehow gotten hosed with all the recoveries I was doing. Even my AOMEI backups wouldn't work at all, the system would just shut down when I tried to run it. Like I said, I only got this thing back up with using a 23H2 install USB I had made a while ago. Now I'm just half A in getting any of my stuff installed again, and a lot of it won't install due to expired keys. I had to go buy a key from some place for 26 bucks just to get Office 2021 Plus back activated. Man, I could eat nails over this crap. But it's my own fault, cause all was well until I was wondering why I hadn't seen the latest 23H2 windows download, so I re-enabled to get latest updates, big mistake, cause that 24H2 just downloaded and installed. What I should have done was not reboot, but go directly to where you roll back to the previous version. Cause after the boot I was done.

I'm just an old retired guy by himself here, and have more to do than just fiddle with this stuff now, I'm not like I used to be able to do with this stuff.

Here's another shot of my disk management. Drive D isn't even viewable. It used to be a clean SSD. I tried to re-format it, but it said it was in use by another something.

Anyway thanks

There is no EFI partition on your system drive which leads me to assume your boot loader is installed on disk number 1 (in one of the 4 EFI partitions). I suspect if you remove disk number 1 the system wont boot anymore.

Thanks, I'm not all that up on everything, I just know enough to be dangerous.

I have (had) 3 separate SSDs on it when I got it. It was during the restore's is when it went nuts. It's when I had to resort to installing the system from a USB drive is when I guess I was too frustrated to even figure out where to install the thing. When It installed, I remember seeing some “fix” going on.

I was thinking of at some point to just find ALL the SSDs and replace the one with the OS, with one of the empty ones and start over.

I have no idea how to go about trying to recover all the drives again by using my partition program without hosing up everything.

The good thing is I got this off eBay for 300 3yrs ago so, it's not a big monetary loss, it's just that it was a good machine and worked well with the way it was set up. If I ever look into buying another one, I will make sure to ask if windows 24H2 is installed.

Strange, since the install of the OS and the weird issue with the drive (see my disk management picture) the system now starts up showing this screen. However only the top box works, the bottom doesn't.

Also if I don't select it at all the laptop boots up into windows anyway after a few seconds.

Anyone know if it's correctable without having to remove the ssd's? I was wondering if reformatting drive D would bring it back and show my 3 ssd's again. But I know if I did that most likely the is would also be gone. Although I assume could restore my backup back. I'm just not all that confident with it now.

No offense meant here, but your disk management is in a mess. As such, I would hesitate to advise what to do to straighten everything out, as I could easily advise wrong since I don't have my own eyes and hands on it.
