I am still waiting for my old Omen Desktop to be upgraded from 10 to 11. It is compatible so I guess there is some drivers or something that need updating before it is offered. I have not clicked the Check for Updates button as I get preview builds and things I don't want, also if I do install 11 and the pc is missing some drivers it may end in trouble

I'm sort of leery about 11 and driver support right now. My plan is when I get the new motherboard and processor is to stay with 10 for a while. It just works and I know it a bit better than 11

Plus I'm getting a first gen Ryzen.. that way I can avoid 11.

Thanks Berton, I know about that but that will force a download which may be compatible but not suitable for the system. there is some reason It hasn't been offered via windows update yet as my other 2 machines were fine and gave it to me ages ago

That's a sound plan, I was thinking about staying on 10 but my test machine went so well with the upgrade I did the other one and have never had a problem. The one on ten Jeff, is our household one mostly used by my wife

Microsoft have said that they will concentrate the Windows Update availability of Windows 11 first on systems that were part of the Insider preview, then on those systems most likely to update without any issues. After this will come the main range of windows 10 Systems. The main batch is not planned to be offered the update until the start of 2022, with the majority being completed by the end of the first quarter 2022

If you want to ensure you get the update before the holiday season, or even in 2021 the best way is a manual install

Personally I believe it's a self interest action on Microsoft's part, the last thing they want is a lot of systems to fail with an Install coming into the holiday season, even if these are only the older models / Hardware - Microsoft is getting more astute these days with managing a major release, of course it's also good for the user as some older systems will be updated manually and fail in some way, providing Microsoft with good data to adjust things for the main batch of systems when they are due for update

@barman58 That makes a lot of sense. both my laptops are working brilliant on 11 the one I am talking about was bought during the first lockdown when pc's were hard to get hold of, t's quite well spected and fully compatible with 11 but is my wife's main household pc so I am quite happy for it to stay on 10 as it works so well.

Hi,

I think it's a processor thing. Microsoft is still completing the list of compliant processors.

I have two drives on my PC (because I had a motherboard failure on an older computer and kept the second drive). On the newer drive, I had WIN 7 on the older WIN 10. Then I made a clean install of WIN 11 on the (former) WIN 7 drive. It went through without any problems.

Then, last week or so, I had a very heavy use of the CPU ressources when I was on my WIN 10 drive: Windows had dowloaded something to evaluate my (second) PC. The result of the evaluation was that my processor was not compliant (the rest was fine).

But it's the same processor for both drives !

The check on the processor compatibility was completed prior to the official Release of Windows 11 - and a few late Gen 7 Intel processors were added to the list ... there are no plans for further additions

There was no limit on Processor required for Windows 11 during the Beta stage,

After Release the processor requirements will not apply to a clean install of Windows 11 though Support could be withdrawn in the future.

The requirements for the processor will apply for updates via windows updates to Windows 10 Systems - which is what the checker was confirming - although there are several ways to circumvent this at the users own risk - No MS Support if it fails

Ok, thanks, that explains it !
(Whether the distinction makes sense is another question, ... but I do not complain  ).

I installed Win11 on a separate partition and the other one still has Windows 8.1. After installation I picked in Device manager the System32 directory of the previous OS to search drivers. It automatically found and installed many.

The issue has been solved by barman58 and marked as so. As I said, I am not doing anything other than waitig for it to be offered normally through windows updates. my other 2 machines are on it and were offered it on the release date.

Good old MS, hope you get that sorted ok, it sounds like it may be a funny one to get right

That makes a lot of sense. both my laptops are working brilliant on 11 the one I am talking about was bought during the first lockdown when pc's were hard to get hold of, it's quite well spected and fully compatible with 11 but is my wife's main household pc so I am quite happy for it to stay on 10 as it works so well.
I've never signed up as an Insider. My System One (built in Dec. 2020) was deliberately bought so that I could transfer the W10 system from my old unsupported machine that's still the one I find myself using most often.

It ran a test transfer upgraded to W11 (courtesy of a UUPDump ISO) for two months before the RTM release. At the end of September I officially made it my 'main machine' and 'retired' the old one by transferring the W10 system again. I fully expected it to be offered 11 on day one, but had to wait 15 days for it to appear.

In addition to the 'newest first' principle, MS are using telemetry to train their phased rollout to only offer 11 to machines that would be expected to have a smooth upgrade experience. Trying to second-guess machine learning such as this is remarkably difficult

Microsoft said:
We will use a measured and phased process in offering Windows 11 as we have done with Windows 10 feature updates. Our objective is to provide you with a smooth upgrade experience. We will begin to offer the upgrade to eligible new devices first. Then, as with previous rollouts, we will study device health data and other signals to determine the pace at which Windows 11 is offered via Windows Update....

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

@Bree I have an old machine that is not compatible but was allowed to up upgrade to 11 as an insider so I tried it and then went back to 10 were it stays and left the program. I then bought a Dell Inspiron 3501 added an extra 8gb ram set it up on 10 how I wanted it joined insiders on that machine and upgraded to 11 and left the insiders the day before public release and that works so well on 11 I decided to upgrade my best machine to 11, that to is working perfectly. so it's just the wife's on 10 now

@The-Hive - The only HP machines I still support are quite old and none of them are eligible for a Win11 update -- so I can not provide you any specific advice about the Omen.

But I used to be quite active on the HP Support Forums and there were LOTS of posts of folks who forced Win10 updates onto their machines only to have them fail due to lack of HP driver updates.

Your best bet is to contact the HP Support Forums with your concerns. They have information on model-specific qualifications and can provide that to you.

I have fully compliant laptop and have not received update either. I have trried Windows Update Assistant - it fails.
I know a clean install would suceed yet I prefer an update to avoid many program installs. I suspect November Windows 10 update will be needed before Win 11 will be offered.
