Stopping "Microsoft account problem" notification

Windows 11
In a moment of weakness I had previously configured my new laptop to use an old Microsoft account to login. It took much frustrating effort to rid myself of this login and go back to using a local account/password (involving deleting all of the biometric Windows Hello methods that had become associated with this Microsoft account).

Presently, I can login locally and have no other real issues with my brief run-in with using a Microsoft account other than one nagging issue. Several times a day I spot a notification down near the time/date in the taskbar. Upon opening the notifications I see the same notification again and again. Windows is upset that I'm not logged into my Microsoft account. I can dismiss this notification but it will regenerate before long and continue to hound me over and over.
sign int
All of the solutions I see online either apply to Windows 10 (and I'm running Windows 11) or they apply to people who are actually using a Microsoft login (which I am not doing as I use a local login). Frequently, this notification is attributed to problems with the Nearby Sharing functionality (which seems largely unused and deprecated). I have Nearby Sharing turned off and I am not logged into a Microsoft account.

I do not experience this issues on my Windows 11 desktop (which I never made the awful mistake of trying to use a Microsoft account login). I'm assuming the problem on my laptop is due to some residue leftover from my experimentation with using a Microsoft account to log in to my laptop.

Is there anybody else out there that does not use Microsoft account login (using local login instead) who has experienced this persistent nag to sign into a Microsoft account? I do not wish to turn off all notifications and it seems that there is no fine grained control to turn off notifications for just this particular nag.

Any thoughts on how to make this go away?

I get it from time to time, but not frequently. I just use the Clear All button to dump it, and it seems to go away for some time.

Start > Settings > System > Shared experiences and toggle Nearby sharing to the Off position. I think that will get rid of it.
On my Windows 11 laptop that would be Start >Settings >System >Nearby sharing

I don't have a "Shared experiences" as the last step in that navigation. Regardless, you will see from the second screen capture that I attached above that my Nearby sharing is set to Off. I had assumed this might stop this nag notification and toggled off the nearby sharing some time ago but that has not stopped the notifications. I even found a suggestion online to toggle it on and then back off again which had no effect.

If not,
Settings-System-Notifications-all the way to bottom expand additional settings-
uncheck "Suggest ways to get the most out of windows and finish setting up device
Already have that unchecked and it has been so for some time. Does not seem to be of use in stopping the nag notifications to sign in.

AdditionalSettings.jpg

Any thoughts for other things to uncheck or opt out of to cease these nagging pleas to once again log into my Microsoft account. Something has been left behind on my laptop from my brief experiment in logging in with a Microsoft account with the hopes of being able to see a weather widget. On my desktop which I've never made the mistake of logging in with a Microsoft account I do not receive these nag notifications so there is still something tainting my laptop and causing these nags.

Thanks in advance for any clues that might lead to solving this annoyance.

Yup Ive seen this nuisance pop up, not too often (not as bad as Google). I read somewhere that M $ doesnt want you being free and running your own show. It wants you tethered (forever) to the Mother - money maker. Soon you wont be able to run newer m/cs without a M $ Account (which is currently denied sort of. Bit like you cant run an Android device without a Google Account.
FWIW sheeple get uptight about mail security etc yet your smartphone is hardly secure is it. You can be located, monitored, spyed on etc. How often have VIPs had their phones hacked?

I had the same problem after I changed from MS to Local Account. It turned out I still had an Outlook account registered to the Mail App.
I removed it from the app and the notification stopped appearing.
Might be worth checking.

Thanks for the reply and the possible lead to solve this nagging issue.

I've never had an Outlook account configured. In fact, one of the first things I did when setting up this laptop is to remove all the software apps that I knew I wouldn't be using--Outlook was one of them.

I was tired of errant swiping motions (still getting used to a touch screen) bringing up the widgets screen as the result of a right swipe from the left edge of the screen so I turned off the edge swipes. Before doing this a swipe to bring up the widgets screen would still prompt me to log into my Microsoft account (and it had the email address I had associated with this account). It still has saved this email address somewhere on my laptop. Can't seem to find it in the registry but there is a residual memory of me having used a Microsoft account and that seems to be what is causing this nag notification to continually pop up.

The solution to this is out there somewhere (I hope) and I just need to find someone in my similar situation that has solved this.

Thanks in advance to all those who make an effort to solve this nagging issue.

I thought of something else. As a final resort, unlink the device from your Microsoft account.
Go to account.microsoft.com/devices, sign in, and find the device you want to remove.
Select the device to see all your options, select Remove device, then follow the instructions. I'm betting a dollar to a donut that's the culprit.

You can disable widgets through the registry. Enable or Disable Widgets Feature in Windows 11 Tutorial

Microsoft themselves is why I never bothered to set up an account with them. Also running Win 11, unfortunately.
Hey Microsoft, bring back the best OS, that your product ever used Dr. DOS that your original GUI was designed for.

Things to try. Some may be repeats in this thread or things you've already tried.......

1.turn off notifications about device setup-settings>system>notifications>additional settings>uncheck all 3 boxes

2. settings>accounts>email & accounts>if there is any MS account there select it>manage>delete the MS account

3. Get rid of the Office 365 app that came with Windows 11-settings>apps>installed apps>Find Office 365, click 3 dots and click uninstall.

4. Start > Settings > System > Nearby sharing toggle To the Off position.

5. Make sure Onedrive is turned off- Right click onedrive icon in system tray>click gear icon>select settings>Under Account-click unlink this PC if it is present. Make sure both items under ' sync & backup" are toggled OFF.

Under Onedrive preferences, toggle OFF "start onedrive when I signin to Windows'
click 'Manage Backup" Under manager folder backup" make sure there are no checkmarks by any of the folders
RESTART computer for it to take effect

6. turn off Cortana-settings>apps>installed apps>Cortana>toggle OFF 'runs at login' This also takes effect after a restart.

I kept getting a nag to set up a pin. I got rid of it by changing a registry entry. If this happens to you
Open regedit as administrator. Go to following key and change its value to 0 so that it looks like this
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\default\Settings\AllowSignInOptions > Value=0

Note: If any of these suggestions works, please let us know. Know that Microsoft might re-activate some of these things after a significant update, so don’t be surprised if the account notification problem comes back at some point.
