A few days ago my automatic login failed to work, and still does not. Windows tells me that it could not connect to my account. The user shown has my name, but not my picture. In the lower left corner there are two users, both with my name and one with my picture. If I click my picture and enter my PIN I get logged into the machine.

Where did the other user come from? Why the same name as me? Why are there no other accounts showing in the Settings? There are no odd users under Computer Management/Local Users and Groups either.

I'm suspecting an update happened, as I haven't installed any new software lately, except WSL with Ubuntu, and it's installation didn't coincide with the issue.

I ran into this after changing my windows password,
Netplwiz or Control userpasswords2 would show greyed out box to enable autologin

What worked for me was
adding these two keys to registry at
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\PasswordLess\Device
DevicePassword value 1
DevicePasswordLessBuildVersion REG_DWORD value 0
rebooted
then after repeating control userpasswords2
Checking the Box Users must enter a user name and password then unchecking it
and the option to add password popped for me to enter username and password ( only allow Windows Hello is disabled ofc)
