I've been struggling with my wife's laptop not printing for a while now. Printing worked fine in the past. I get the feeling the problems started around the time when the laptop was updated to 22H2 but cannot prove that. Printer is an HP Desk Jet 2600 All-in-One.

When clicking print, nothing happens. An "action required" meassage appears for the printer. After much fiddling I learned restarting the print spooler got the file to print which is odd as the print spooler service shows "running" and is set to start automatically. There is no indication it is stopped or malfunctioning. I've removed the printer and drivers and re-installed after downloading the requisite files from HP, but still the same result. My view is that the printer is fine (works OK with my Linux laptop) and suspect the problem lies in Windows and the spooler service. Appreciate any help someone can provide.

Welcome to the forum. Here are some things to try,

1. run troubleshooter. settings>system>troubleshoot>other troubleshooters>Printer>Run

2. run HP Print Scan Doctor found on printer support page under "Diagnostic Tools"

3. There is a firmware update for that printer on its support page. Check to see if it's been applied to your printer. HP DeskJet 2600 All-in-One Printer series Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Customer Support

4. Make sure you have no corrupt system files that is causing this problem. Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair. If it found corruption it could not fix followup with this command (note the spaces)
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Restart computer

5. Completely uninstall the printer, then uninstall its software. Restart and reinstall. HP suggests using the HP Easy Start app rather than the software package. It is on the above support page.

Might check some of the posts in the Windows 10 Help Forums, lots of issues with some updates which may still apply in Win11. What I got out of most of those was with USB connected printers but mine don't connect directly to a computer.

Thanks for the replies. After removing/adding the printer for the umpteenth time last night I finally got success but not in the way I thought.

When re-adding the printer instead of accepting the device automatically detected, I clicked on the link to manually add a device then on the option to add a printer by IP address or hostname. In the dialog which appeared I kept the device type as IPP and plugged in my printer's IP address. That simple, it worked straight away. The only difference I can see is printer is now using the Microsoft IPP class driver vice the HP version.
I will mark this as solved from my perspective.

@ABC9087 Just a suggestion. Since you got the printer to work using it's ip adddress, it's a good idea to assign the printer a static ip address. Sometimes if a wireless printer is turned off or the router is reset, the ip address will change when turned back on, so the ip you used to set it up may change. Using a static ip address will prevent that. Know that that printer will only run on the 2.4 ghz band of your router.
To print its configuration page - On the printer's control panel, press the Wireless button

and the Information button

at the same time.

Setting a Static IP Address
Once you know your printer’s IP address from the page you printed, entering it is pretty easy. Use the ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway from the configuration page you printed.
  • To get into setup run your Web browser.
  • In the Web browser’s address bar, type the IP address of your printer and press Enter. Assuming you entered the right address, the HP printer control panel should appear.
  • Click the Networking tab.
  • Under Connections, click Wireless.
  • Under IP Address Configuration, click Manual IP.
  • Enter the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway in the appropriate boxes.
  • Click Apply
