Let's see how to simplify this. I'm on the beta channel. I switched to the dev channel and installed the update (22533.1001). After, I noticed my SSD was 75% full. The system file was something like 570GB. That's WAY too large. So, I rolled back my OS and switched back to the beta channel. Well, the system file is 206GB. Here's an image:

system files.png
That's still way too large. @BunnyJ and I were trying to figure out why but couldn't Any takers on the issue and a solution that does not require a clean install or Windows repair. I'm really not in the mood to reinstall everything...

Thanks!

I already downloaded it and ran it. Been outside, so I'm just now seeing this. It's the Users folder. It has 273.2GB of files. Does this seem normal?

The system file is where restore points are stored. A large one usually means lots of restore points. Delete some/all as you see fit, and size will be much reduced.

If that proves to be the case, don't forget to reconfigure system restore to reduce the amount of space it uses but since it appears to be the "users" folder I can't see how that would have anything to do with system restore.

It was only 21GB, not enough to really cause the large size. I cleaned it anyway, but correctly if I'm wrong - deleting everything will remove program profile setting. No?

Okay. Partially solved. My music, which I house in D: was also in C: for some reason. That was 170GB of files. I deleted that and have this now:

TreeSize 2.png

That's more reasonable in terms of size. How large/small is everyone's Users directory? Does 184.5GB look more reasonable to everyone?

Okay. Partially solved. My music, which I house in D: was also in C: for some reason. That was 170GB of files. I deleted that and have this now:

View attachment 18607

That's more reasonable in terms of size. How large/small is everyone's Users directory? Does 184.5GB look more reasonable to everyone?
There is no answer to that - all users are different e.g. I store my data on a separate drive and only use user folders for temporary data, so rarely over 5 GB.

Problem with data in user drives, is that image backups grow as the user data grows. Image backups are not the best way to backup data (in my opinion but others may disagree).

If you keep data in a separate drive (or partition), you can reinstall OS without affecting data partition (but data still should be backed up of course).

In my opinion, 185 GB is far too much as I would store it elsewhere, but hey that is me.

It was only 21GB, not enough to really cause the large size. I cleaned it anyway, but correctly if I'm wrong - deleting everything will remove program profile setting. No?
No the temp folder only has temporary files, but it is common practice to delete everything but the last weeks files in case some are still needed by a program. 21 GB is quite large for the temp folder.

How large/small is everyone's Users directory? Does 184.5GB look more reasonable to everyone?
Impossible to say. It depends entirely on how each of us choose to use our PCs. On my main machine which I use to keep the primary copies of all my personal files the Users folder is 38GB. You can expand the folders in TreeSize Free to get a more detailed view of where you are using your space. In my case the majority of the files are in Pictures.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I just reviewed my user group and I now have 16.2GB allocated and 16.0GB used.. it's big but I have data in those folders that I use and created. I think expanding that group like this will tell us what's going on.

I'm moving some things to a different drive. My OneDrive was housed on my C: drive. I moved it to E: drive. Deleting Windows.Old, which is nearly 21GB. I have a backup of my drive before I switched to the Dev channel and updated, so there's no worries. I'll see what I can clean up or move. The drive is 1TB, so it's not like I don't have the room. Still, it's a little large.

It is big but big depends on what you're doing and what you have on it. It all varies from person to person. I did some cleaning up and now my user area is down to 4.8GB.. so that's what I expect it to be about. I guess I should do more evaluation of it but I'll do that later on.

BTW.. Treeview is a great app. Loving it.
