    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

I have my systems backed up and disk images made already in the event that the "Patch Tuesday" updates crash my systems. Just hope there are no issues with these latest updates.

They never crash or get corrupted by Windows updates.
Am I doing something wrong? Should I go out this afternoon and buy replacement computers that are guaranteed to crash? And what if they don't crash despite the guarantee; could I take them back to the shop & demand a full refund?

Well I am the same - I attribute that to the fact that I do not use 3rd party start menu tools, do not use a chainsaw to remove Edge or similar, do not use registry cleaner tools, always do updates.

Perhaps most important of all, I never use driver update tools or rarely do a clean install (only as an absolute last resort).

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. I rarely had problems with "Patch Tuesday" updates, but best to be prepared if something does go wrong. I always keep my systems updated with the latest updates and have backup plans in place.

My post was largely in jest. However, it does seem that more often than not (yes, a majority of the time) something does actually get broken. Most of the time these are issues that affect only a small percentage of Windows installations and frequently they are minor issues or have workarounds available. As a result, most people will never see an issue. I have been affected very rarely myself.

However, almost every month, if you pay attention, you will see articles pop up within a few days of patch Tuesday noting that there are users reporting some issue or another with the updates.

I just joke about it because it amuses me how often something gets broken.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

Well that's the last (and by far the slowest) of my 8 machines just completed its update. They all started at the same time, the first three completed within minutes of each other at around half an hour.

But this of course is only the beginning for me. Next I'll be thoroughly cleaning up each machine then making fresh images of them.....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

I'm not sure I see why you're making post-update images right away. I always make a pre-update image, in case anything I can't live with happens as a result of the update, but if the update seems to go well and the cleanup operations are successful, I just go back to my regular imaging schedule.

Same here. I've never had a problem with a Windows Update. We differ in that I like to do several clean installs during the year. I like to know that I have a clean system and don't have undetected malware. I always maintain two systems so I can do clean installs without ever being down. All my data and photos are kept on Microsoft OneDrive, so both computers always have identical data in real-time and are always identical to use. I also do a Macrium Reflect image every night before shutting down.

When you have as many machines as I have to back up, then external storage can be something of a premium. I want to image each machine when I'm sure it's at its leanest and cleanest. and the only time they are all 'lean and mean' is straight after the Patch Tuesday patch/clean-up routine. So my 'schedule' (albeit a manual one) is to patch, clean, then back up each Patch Tuesday. I retain the latest and the previous two month's images for each machine, so I always have plenty of choice should I need a restore.

The only files that may change more frequently are my user files. I separately have a little batch file to back those up, which I use twice weekly.

Hear, hear! I do that, too, and it helps me to sleep better. The next day inevitably brings software updates, configuration changes, and some new data, and if anything goes south during the day, I can restore to the previous night without losing much at all.

My nightly Macrium Reflect images are my fail-safe. In all the time I've used Macrium Reflect, I have yet to actually restore an image. Although I have, on occasion, mounted an image in Microsoft File Explorer and copied a file or two that I needed.
