I have come across some old SATA drives and want to know what is on them before I destroy them. (Photos below)

So I want to connect them to my yoga laptop which has only USB-C ports. I think this
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=sata+har...ve+connection+to+usb,aps,129&ref=nb_sb_noss_2

will work (I have an old USB male to USB-C male adapter) but I am out of my lane here and looking for confirmation.

Thanks very much for any assistance/insight/sympathy anyone can offer.

Bob

It should work fine but I prefer to put drive in a full enclosure as it can get easily disconnected as sometimes the Sata connector is not as tight as you would like.

A simple USB to SATA adapter you linked to will only work with 2.5" SATA drives. For 3.5" SATA drives you need an adapter that also supplies power to the drive.

A 2.5" SATA drive only requires 5-volts which is supplied by the USB port. However a 3.5" SATA drive require both 5-volts and 12-volts.

I have the following which includes an enclosure. It works with both 2.5" and 3.5" drives
UGREEN External Hard Drive Enclosure for 3.5 2.5 Inch SATA SSD HDD USB 3.0 to SATA III Hard Drive Case with UASP 12V Power Adapter

UGREEN also has an adapter without the enclosure to save money ($15 vs $27):
UGREEN SATA to USB 3.0 Adapter Cable for 3.5 2.5 Inch SSD/HDD Hard Drive Reader SATA III Hard Drive Disk Converter

To connect to a USB-C port I use an adapter like this:
Amazon Basics USB-C to USB-A 3.1 Gen1 Female Adapter Cable Converter, 5Gbps High-Speed

I also have a USB-A to USB-C adapter like this which also works:

I am sure if you look you can find something a little cheaper but I have shown what I have as an example of what you need.

Just keep in mind the 2.5" drives only need 5VDC but the 3.5" need both 5VDC and 12VDC.

Sorry, @MisterEd and I were thinking alike.

For testing, cleaning and hardware cloning I use a USB 3 Eaxer dual-bay drive dock, uses a mix of 2.5" and 3.5" drives and has 3 USB ports with 1 being a charging port.

Thanks to the several responders; you guys are great! Especially to those of you who pointed out that the voltage requirements for HDDs and SSDs differ. MisterEd, I was ready to pull the trigger on the enclosure you recommended but then noticed the port which has a configuration I have never seen before. Does it come with a cable which has a male connection which plugs into that strangely shaped port?

Thanks, Bob

That's a Type B Superspeed port.

It's related to the older Type B port (which is pretty much square), but it supports higher data rates.

Many USP external devices (printers, drives, scanners, etc.) use a Type B port of some type at the device.
