The Windows 11 Home Insider Preview I'm on completely screwed up everything and no one is helping me

I'm on Windows 11 Home Insider Preview Evaluation copy. Build 27729.rs_prerelease.241011-1428. It'll say "You're on the latest build for your device Installed build: 27729.1000 rs_prerelease". My issue is when I reset the PC, my Display adapters and High Definition Audio Bus in System devices DOESN'T have the yellow triangle with black exclamation mark icon. After a few restarts or shutdowns over the span of at least a day and a half, eventually they just break again and get the yellow triangle with black exclamation mark icon again, and then it completely zooms in on everything on the screen. To where I then have to go to System > Display and change "200% (Recommended)". My AMD Radeon RX 6800M and AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics both say "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" and "This device isn't using any resources because it has a problem". My High Definition Audio Bus says "

This device is currently waiting on another device or set of devices to start. (Code 51)

I'm boutta reach out to ASUS and AMD since Microsoft refused to help me because "There's nothing I can do since you're on a Windows 11 Home Insider Preview" is what I've repeatedly kept getting told. This is so annoying and I just want this to stop happening! And before anyone tries to comment "Check that the cables connecting your GPU to the monitor are in good condition and properly connected". Don't even bother because I know for a certainty this is not an external hardware issue. It's this broken Windows 11 Home Insider Preview update that messed everything up and nobody can help me simply because I'm on it.

That right there is your problem. I am not sure how it is surprising that you could or would face issues with an insiders version of Windows. I am not surprised that Microsoft doesn't want to help. I’d guess there is a clause when you sign up for insider previews that reads something like “You’re on your own, don’t call us, we aren’t home”

My suggestion would be > Leave the insiders.

Go to Settings> Windows Update > Click Windows Insider Program
Select "Stop getting preview builds"
Then turn on "Unenroll this device when the next version of Windows releases
Wait for it to complete.

It’s not the answer you want, I can see that, but in all honesty, I am not sure why people are surprised when they face issues with what is essentially a beta.

If nothing else, if you install a Windows released OS, these problems may desist.

I don’t get the attraction, but I am sure others like yourself do.

Yep - this is further exacerbated by being the Canary Build which is the riskiest of all Insider versions.

MS made it clear that the Canary channel had limited documentation about any upates etc.

MS frontline support have never supported Insider builds NOR should they - how are they going to advise on Insiders - that would require in depth knowledge only available in the Insider Development Teams.

Support for Insider versions does not exist other than making a feedback post in the Feedback Hub but that is purely a statistical based system Individual problems rarely get addressed - the Hub is not a helpline.

Futhermore MS make it very clear that Insider versions should not be your main OS.

A popular option is to run it in a virtual machine. A variant is to install it in a native boot vhdx file as a dual boot option.

I am 90+% certain issue is related to incompatible drivers. Drivers may work fine on release version as they will have been tested by vendors but not tested in depth on any Insider version.

I hope an expert here can help but the most obvious thing to do is update the drivers to latest on vendor websites and see if that sorts it but I rather doubt it.

OP could try a repair upgrade (see tutorials)

Also, MOST IMPORTANTLY - any seasoned Insider knows to make regular image backups so one can revert to previous version if things go down the pan. There are loads of quality image backup tools, some even free e.g. AOMEI, Hasleo, Macrium Reflect Free (still possible to download), Easeus Todo etc.

Frankly, the best adice is to clean install with official release version, then if you get issues MS Support may be able to help, noting that your issues if repeated on release version are probably beyond frontline support capability and may get elevated to the next level but that can take months if you even get a response.

MS is right. You are on Insider preview so they can't help you. Not even the hardware manufacturer can help you. Only you can help yourself since you signed up for Insider preview and supposedly know what you are doing.
If you do a clean install now, you will be trouble free tomorrow.

And that's where your problem lies. The Insider Canary Channel is the most risky one to be on, bugs are to be expected. You should never use it as your PC's main (or only) OS. The only way to leave the Canary Channel is a clean install.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel

  • The builds we release to the Canary Channel represent the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows and features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced and never get released beyond Windows Insiders....

  • To get off the Canary Channel, a clean install of Windows 11 will be required.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Probably Windows Update tries unsuccessfully to install new drivers. Just manually download latest drivers from AMD.

Re AMD GPU's and video card drivers. I've got a RX 7900 XTX and AMD Radeon software, and drivers have never worked well with Windows 11 beta or dev (never used canary) insider channel builds on my PC.

I also found that the AMD GPU drivers pushed out via Windows Update have never been stable on my system and should be avoided.

The OP could try the following if he isn't going to reinstall Windows (my best advice):
1. Download DDU and/or the AMD Cleanup Utility
2. Download the latest stable Radeon software and drivers from AMD (24.10.1)
3. Disconnect computer from the internet (to stop Windows Update from installing GPU drivers).
4. Run DDU and/or the AMD Cleanup Utility in Safe Mode and wipeout the AMD GPU Radeon software and drivers.
5. Reboot into Windows 11.
6. Install the 24.10.1 software/driver package.
7. Reboot.
8. Reconnect PC to internet.

I've never joined the Canary Channel and I'm a very technical user of Windows.
I've never joined Insiders, but I do have all the channels from RP through Beta, Dev and Canary. All were enrolled with the OfflineInsiderEnroll script.

None of then are installed as the main OS on any of my machines. ALL of them are running as native boot vhdx. Much safer that way, and easy to dispose of if/when no longer wanted.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

The conclusion is that Windows Update installs incompatible drivers. To fix that download latest graphics drivers directly from AMD. Also download Windows Update Show/Hide Tool or Windows Automatic Update Manager (aka WAU Manager) both available from Major Geeks. Restart in Safe Mode and run DDU to remove the AMD drivers. Then restart in normal mode and install the official drivers from AMD. Immediately run either tool and search for updates. Check the box to hide (block) any AMD update so it won't install next time you run Windows Update. Check every couple of weeks for new version and block that too.

Being an Insider Canary build user, I can say that Insider builds are Use At Your Own Risk. As for your problem I'm thinking that it could be being caused because Windows Update is updating the drivers and they are incompatible with your system. Go into Device Manager and see if the drivers were updated. If they are, try rolling back to an older driver that works.

That's why I would download the ISO and disconnect from the internet to upgrade, even a compliant PC. To prevent Windows Update interfering with the upgrade and screwing it. I know there is an option not using Windows Update during installation but I doubt it makes any difference. It is safer to disconnect from the internet.
