This is just a discussion post.

Lately, Microsoft and about a zillion other software companies, are trying to turn out product with an all-in-one theme.
Like... software Swiss Army knives. While Swiss Army knives definitely have their uses, they end up being a collection of tools that only "simulate" the tools they represent. The scissors in a Swiss Army knife are handy, but hardly do the job of a proper pair of scissors.

This, seems to me, to be a problem that is plaguing software these days. Every company is trying to create software that does "all" the tasks, but with only half the quality.

I think the software industry needs to concentrate on doing one thing and doing it well. Then, if desired, they can offer plug-ins for other tasks.

Here is a picture of one of America's premier muscle cars, the 1969 Dodge Charger. And here is a picture of the same car with all-the-fixings...

I think companies like Microsoft, for example, should concentrate on making a basic version of Windows, that actually works flawlessly.
Then leave the "souping up" to plug-ins or third parties.

What we're getting instead is souped-up versions of Windows that don't seem to do anything... well.
They do a lot of things partially, but nothing really well.

I think when we buy software we should get the version like the pic on the left. Then, if folks want to, they can turn it into the pic on the right.
The "option" of course being with the user, rather than the software company.

Well, that's my six and a half cents. :-)

I can follow you, personally I don’t use those ‘bonus tools’ that came with Windows.

With a few exceptions like Paint, Notepad and File Explorer.

I am very pleased with Windows 11. Until now it runs Rock solid on my Laptop and on my sons PC.

For me it’s just an OS, with some extra luggage :-), to run the functional applications and games I use.

Nice muscle car by the way

Same. I just removed all the Window's Apps.
I kept... calculator, Paint 3D, Notepad, File Explorer and unfortunately... EDGE (completely blocked from the internet).

If you give Edge a 'change' you will like this Browser too. Its a so called 'No Nonsense' Browser. ;-)

Probably a few will shoot me for that, but I get used to that allready.

I think it would be pretty cool if windows was built in a modular way, so that its components could be maintained, updated and added like normal standalone programs; or at least more independently from the OS itself. Would definitely make sense for private users

Used chrome for years then went to firefox, back to chrome then for about the last year I used the new Edge and
all I can say is at first I loved it way more then chrome or about 20 other browsers Ive tried out there, but
about 2 months ago I switched back to firefox to give it a new try and currently I WONT go back..lol.
Edge started Blocking half the websites I visit and a few other issues were happening. So yeah firefoxs UI
etc are awesome compared to the last time I used it. To each his own on the browser they use but I was just sharing my reasoning of why I dont
use it. Yea some here may smoke you in your comment but again to each his own. I have only one gripe with ALL browsers except for Vivaldi.
Wish they all would move to being able to place the search/tab bar to the bottom of the screen. Ive always thought how stupid moving my mouse up down up down my screen a million times. Same like android, I cant stand that theres a million browsers but only like 2 allow me to place the search and tabs to the bottom of the screen. That is where my hand/fingers are. It is inconvenient and a waste of time with it on top, uncalled for reaching to type to search etc. UIs nowadays are meant to and supposed to be user friendly.

But to what advantage is it to Microsoft to have a stripped down version of Windows with almost nothing included for it to maintain. I can recommend any number of Linux distros that are intended to be bare bones, but people would try to use it and complain that it cannot do X, Y, and Z without doing a bunch of commands from the terminal.

Microsoft would probably have fewer people using their software if it only did the absolute basics. I remember the old days of having to use software to mount an ISO, install a PDF reader to read a PDF, install some zip utility to handle a zip file, etc. I cannot say I would honestly go back to those days where I had to install a dozen things to get what I would consider to be basic functionality.

Win 11 is a keeper IMO - but have scratched my head a few times wondering if something is a bug or feature (just started using 11 a couple weeks ago so my opinion might change) ...

I'm not talking about the basic things an OS should do. I'm talking about that long, long list of Windows Apps, we are all getting saddled with. If people want 5-6 Xbox apps, they should go to the MS store and get them.
Same with things like Teams, Widgets, To Do, OneDrive, Cortana, ClipChamp, Windows Defender, Notifications, Focus, etc.
And about 10-15 more that I no longer remember.

There's enough junk apps in there to build a whole other OS.

And it's not just that all those junk apps are there, but there's no easy way to uninstall them either.

This is from someone else's screenshot of REVO. But all the stuff with the RED dots should be plugins...

If people want it, they can get it from MS store. But to include it with every copy of the OS and make it hard to uninstall... is just ridiculous.
Worst of all, it's not even done for altruistic reasons. Where's the 5-6 Playstation tools. Why does EDGE try to take over default browser-ship. Why is it practically locked into the BING search engine, etc.

Windows is getting to be like one of those racing games with "walls" everywhere.

I figure any given person or group, wants at most about half those things. That's why they should be plugins, rather than included.

Windows Server is like a stripped down Windows ?!?
That's my impression. You don't get all the add-ons. After all it's job is to be a server not a wiz bang I'm trying to be better than a Mac. The concentration is on performance.

Might have to check that out. I didn't know that.
I figured it would be built to... "serve", to have sharing so built into the OS to be unable to shut that off.
