Todo Backup Free - Restoring an O/S versus "transferring a system"?

I just had a short chat (not a verbal chat, the wretched kind of chat) with Easeus support, and it was like the old joke about the lost helicopter and Microsoft.

Using Todo Backup free, I want to be able to backup and restore Windows 11 on the laptop. That's it. I PRESUME it can do this since the list of what it can do SAYS it can. BUT, when I went in to create the Emergency Disk and put it on a flash drive, I got this message: WinPE created with Free version does not support Clone and System Transfer.

ISN'T restoring a system backup to a new storage device "transferring a system"? And if not, why not? How would it even know the new storage device WASN'T going to get unplugged from the laptop and stuck in a different computer?

So, since at least most of y'all are human, and have probably gone through this, CAN I use the free version to ACTUALLY make a system backup and restore it to a replacement drive in the laptop if needed?

Again... you're using software that not many use.
But... pretty much all backup software can clone, transfer and backup/restore.

I don't think backup/restore falls under the clone or transfer heading.

I have never even used clone or transfer on any backup software. I always just use a backup image.
You can restore it to pretty much anywhere.
Different computer, different drive, etc.

Technically, restoring from a backup image is NOT transferring or cloning.

Restoring a system backup is not the same as cloning.

Restoring a system backup is more or less the same as any imaging tool.

You just boot from the recovery drive, select image and select target drive.

The System Transfer feature that it's telling you is missing from Free is called Universal Restore. It finds the drivers that may be needed if you were to restore to dissimilar hardware. In Macrium Reflect this function is called ReDeploy, and is also missing from the Free version.

However, Windows is very good at sorting out new drivers for itself should you restore to a different machine. I have done so with Reflect and always ended up with a working machine. Even though I have the Home version of Reflect I have never needed to use ReDeploy.

Universal Restore can recover a system image to new hardware. Moreover, it enables you to restore the operating system (OS) to a computer with dissimilar hardware. Therefore, you can restore your OS in case of a hardware failure and deploy the same OS to different computers.


Universal Restore software is a tool that allows you to restore the system image to different computers. It helps boot OS on a new physical or virtual machine. Besides, it lets you make the old system bootable on new hardware and helps you conduct system image recovery in a different hardware environment.

System transfer is not the same as restoring to a different drive but there are technical similarities. And yes you can do it with Todo Backup free. But up to this point, I still don't trusy Todo that much.
Nothing is more user friendly than Macrium.
All first timers go through a learning curve. Once you get past through that, you are already an expert. Give it another try.

What is not trustworthy about Todo Backup?

I HAD Macrium. Even after over a year, I found the process for setting up and managing backups FAR more difficult than Aomei or Todo Backup. This was several years ago so it may have changed, but I'd never say "nothing is more user friendly than Macrium". And now that they've done away with their free version I'm less likely to try it as in my recollection that "learning curve" you talked about was still really steep even after over a year the last time.

I have EaseUS Todo (licence courtesy of this forum :-). The free version limits you to back up and restore. Any other functions you need the paid version. So the free version won't clone. You need the paid version for that. I like it - it's really quick and simple to back up and visually user friendly.

Personally, I think Todo is still glitchy and sometimes struggles to complete a backup or create a corrupted image backup that cannot be restored.
That is simply the reason why I don't trust it sometimes. I thought I have a backup, but eventually it cannot be restored. I always go back to Macrium.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

That is a point. I haven't tried to restore an image yet :-) Making images seems to go smoothly though.

I have always found it to be rock solid. My main issue is it can be a bit slow.

I wouldn't trust any backup program without first testing it by doing a successful backup and then a successful restore of that backup.

It is really slow. It normally takes me less than 10mins to complete a backup with Macrium. The last image I tried to create with Todo took more than 30mins and I just cancelled it.

It's completely anecdotal, and as always YMMV - I haven't had to restore either of my computers from a System Backup with Todo Backup, but I HAVE had to restore two OTHER people's computers over the last year or so. Both had Todo Backup system backups and both restores worked fine.

Since I'm going to be traveling with the laptop, I just made a Todo System backup on a local SSD on the backup and an AOMEI System backup onto a USB SSD. Had to use AOMEI for the USB backup 'cause the free version of Todo Backup WON'T let you do the system backup to an external drive.
This will GUARANTEE NOTHING happens to the laptop that can be FIXED by restoring a backup! Doesn't mean I WON'T do something stupid, but it WON'T be something I've planned for!
