I have an old single core laptop with an 80gb HDD. It is my guinea pig for a lot of things. I have managed to set it up in a triple boot configuration with Windows 98SE, Windows XP Pro, and Windows 7 Home Premium. It wasn't easy to do since 98 has to be on a FAT32 partition and the other 2 on NTFS. I had to install 98 first and then create the partitions for the other 2 with Partition Wizard. I also had to use EasyBCD after installing 7 to add the 98 partition to the boot menu. 98 actually uses GRUB to boot and says it is booting DOS 6.something.
They all run well but XP does the best. Mostly because that is what the machine came with and I still have all the original drivers. It was a pain finding drivers for 98 and some things still don't have any. I got USB working but I can't get the wireless internet adapter to work. Windows 98 does not support wireless. Amazingly, I did find video drivers that work. I also had to trick Windows into thinking the machine only has 256mb of RAM because 98 does not recognize the 2gb the machine actually has.
XP is great with all the needed drivers and even the HP ones for the keyboard buttons and HP Quick Play DVD player. I also found XP versions of Firefox, Ccleaner, and Avast Free AV that does get definition updates. The wireless works flawlessly.
7 is the 32 bit version of Home Premium and works fine with all drivers found and installed . It does run slower than the other 2 though.
