Solved Trying to Reset PC But Says Can't Download

Hi, I'm trying to do a Reset PC - Keep My Files - Cloud Download and Install ....but I'm getting this totally unexpected error message! Wow, maybe my OS is more corrupted than I thought! (I'd been getting a number of crashes related to ntdll.dll which I could not fix)

Can someone please assist me in getting past this error? I am connected via ethernet cable on very high speed. I'm writing this so clearly I have internet!

I have some thoughts on this, but first, could you tell me why it is that you are trying to perform a reset operation? Is there some specific issue leading you down that path?

If so, did you try any other remedies before resorting to the reset option?

Yes, I've had issues with crashes using certain software. Opened support ticket with them and they advised to re-register ntdll.dll but the command prompts they pointed to did not work as "exe" was not being recognized. I know it's gonna be a pain to reinstall stuff but I've accepted that something is corrupt on the system. Which this other symptom just makes me justify even more taking the time to do this.

You can do repair install offline. Download Windows 11 iSO from MS.. and follow tutorial

My suggestion would be to first try running the System File Checker. Here is a tutorial detailing how to do this:


But before you do that, check BOTH your time and timezone information. Make sure that both are set correctly. If the timezone is incorrect and the time is significantly wrong, it can lead to difficulties connecting to some Microsoft resources and my worry is that it could potentially cause difficulties for System File Checker as well if it has to go to Microsoft to pull down any files.

Unfortunately I've hit another roadblock.
The option I needed, which is illustrated at the link you sent me...is missing from my menu.

Maybe this is related to the original issue of not being able to download from the cloud?
My automatic updates are off but I do check for updates manually every week and have no problems with them being installed.

Have you attempted to perform a system restore? In some cases, it is necessary to perform a new installation due to a different issue.

Unfortunately I've hit another roadblock.


Do the Repair Install with an In-Place Upgrade... use Option #2 the ISO method... that will FIX your Windows problems.



Then... you can upgrade or whatever. But upgrading on a comp with problems, will just give you an upgraded comp with problems.
FIX first... then upgrade... etc.

Chiming back in to update. So the reason I was not being able to Reset PC with Cloud Install was because that significant Win 11 was in the queue and I didn't know about it. I've noticed thru the years that when something suddenly doesn't work on my PC that really should, it's often because there is an update in the queue and I'm not aware of it. I wish it didn't do that. After updating, the ability to Reset PC from Cloud was working properly.

So anyway, I'm writing from the up to date fresh Windows install.

One thing I want to ask early on because I'm getting this popup with every app I install...
It's a User Account Control box that says "Do you want to allow public and private networks to this app?"
By default the right button "No" is highlighted. If I click learn more, I see that "Public" is enabled by default so clicking ALLOW would go ahead and allow the app to communicate via the public network...which I'm guessing is the internet?

So far, I've been asked this when installing Google Chrome, Logitech Options, and a few other basic apps I need to get started.

I don't recall my previous setup was asking me this everytime I installed something... should I leave it like that or turn it off?
What's the difference between Public and Private... why isn't Private allowed by default? Seems to me one would want that at a minimum?

So do I click NO to allowing the apps, or do I click ALLOW, and if so Public only or Private too??

I should specify that I am on a desktop PC, so no chance this machine ends up at a coffee shop.

I see no such message when installing apps. Check "User Account Control Settings". The screenshot is my user account control settings.
Control Panel>User Accounts>Change User Account Control Settings

My network is set to private. You might also change yours to see if it makes any difference in the popups.
Settings>Network & Internet>Wi-fi>
On Wi-fi screen select "Manage Known Networks". Select the network you are connected to>Network Profile Type>Select Private
