Apps Turn On or Off Run at Startup for PowerToys in Windows 10 and Windows 11

PowerToys_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off run at startup for Microsoft PowerToys for your account in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Microsoft PowerToys is a set of utilities for power users to tune and streamline their Windows experience for greater productivity.

When you install Microsoft PowerToys, it will run at startup for your account by default. All users on the PC can turn on or off PowerToys to run at startup for their account.

Here's How:

1 Open the PowerToys app.

2 Open PowerToys Settings. (see screenshot below)

3 In PowerToys Settings, click/tap on General in the left pane. (see screenshot below)

4 Under Appearance & behavior settings, turn on or off Run at startup for what you want.

5 You can now close PowerToys Settings if you like.

That's it,

Not sure what antivirus you use but I read multiple threads of people using avast with “do not disturb” it was disabling their scheduled tasks. Does your antivirus have a game mode or dnd mode or something similar?

I'm using just MS Defender. Unaware of any settings relevant to gaming.

Let’s try this route:

Need autoruns organizer
Scroll down to “Callender” reply
Start where it says
In the window that opens click the "Add" button in the toolbar. Enter the path as shown:
Instead of a scheduled task, just use the path to the PowerToys exe

@dacrone. I could have sworn I replied to your question yesterday. I use MS Defender; don't see any 'game mode' settings.

A bit to late but despite that... Maybe I can help others with this exact problem. (And solve it)

Situation: Win 11 Pro 24H2 Build 26100.3194, PowerToys Version 0.88.0 x64. (Latest to date version)

Had the same problem. Installed PowerToys and despite the setting "Run at startup" it never did. Did not appear in the Settings-Apps-Startup section also. Tinker somewhat to run at startup but to no reveil. So... I forced Windows to make it a startup program. In my case I used an external program for it called; Windows Manager 11. (There are also many other programs that can do the same thing) Inside it's Customizer-Startup Manager I added a general item which I called PowerToys and pointed the where the program was; C:\Program Files\PowerToys\PowerToys.exe. Done! Rebooted the system and the program was started. I could now see that it was added into the Settings-Apps-Startup section where it could turned off or on at will. (As it did with previous versions)

Long time short; basically anybody can now add this without the means of an external program; It's just an addition inside the registry. (Windows looked during the addition of this entry inside the program and decided to give it a different name; I called the entry PowerToys, Windows changed in; PowerToys.Runner)

Here is the regadd file to add this entry to your registry; Just copy the section below. Paste it into Notepad. Save it as a PowerToys.reg file and doubleclick on the saved file and reply to the warning with Yes (add it to the registry) With regedit you can confirm it's addition inside the registry and it also appears in the Settings-Apps-Startup section. (Did the PowerToys developers forgot to add their entry to the Settings-Apps-Startup section?? Not sure....)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"PowerToys.Runner"="C:\\Program Files\\PowerToys\\PowerToys.exe"
