EDIT: Solution found. See post #9 below.

See the screenshot. Anyone know what that little diagonal thingy is on the sound icon? I've never seen that before on any version of Windows I've used.

I can't duplicate it. Is your sound working? Do you have it muted?

New one to me I wonder if it is brand specific, what gear are you using? any other devices share your sound settings? do you have any customisation apps working?

I was thinking on those lines @glasskuter or some other device, but my phone and music player doesn't change the icon and I have never seen one like that before

HP Laptop, nothing shared, no customisation. It's only about 10 days old and I haven't changed much from default settings - yet.
Just a thought, but you haven't paired your phone with Windows 11, have you?
Nothing paired.

It doesn't seem to be affecting anything negatively, it's just odd. I don't like not knowing something about my computer, lol.

I'll be honest and say I'm pretty nit-picky myself. I always want to know WHY. Lots of weird stuff happening in my system I can't explain and it's driving me nuts and I'm one who does not leave well enough alone. I know just enough to be dangerous.

Well I found out what it is, and it's not actually related to the sound settings at all. It's an icon for something called HPBackgroundProcess.
I went into the taskbar settings and turned it off so it doesn't appear on the taskbar anymore. Time to ask Bing what HPBackgroundProcess is all about.

Just checked this on my own HP laptop. Never noticed it because it was hidden, but I have this icon as well. In Taskbar Settings, it does indeed say "HPBackgroundProcess".

printscreen1.png

Clicking the icon in the Systray area refers to something called "myHP Audio Controls".

printscreen2.png

This is an audio control panel which is part of the app "MyHP".

printscreen3.png

If you don't use this, you can simply uninstall "MyHP". I just did and the weird icon is gone now. Good riddance. :)
