This has been going on for about 6 months now- I upgraded from Office 2013 to Office 2016 (special pricing) some 6 months ago BUT windows update, every time it runs, still lists it, and unsuccessfully tried to update it. This results in an red-inked ERROR message that would be daunting to the uninitiated user. By the way, Microsoft says the way to stop this nonsense is to uninstall the offending Office 2013 but its name does NOT appear in that listing. Likewise, my uninstall programs do not list the offending Office 2013 either. Any suggestions?

I have found with MS Office installable versions that if the old Office is not completely uninstalled before a new version is installed, remnants of the old Office are left behind in appdata and the registry. Using an uninstaller like Revo does a good job of completely removing an old version. Since you are past that point, you can try Microsoft's Uninstall Support Tool.

Note: 2013 and 2016 use some of the same dlls. IMO you would need to first uninstall 2016, then 2013. Restart. Then re-install 2016.

If the above solution doesn't work you can manually remove Office, but I can tell you firsthand it is a looong process.
