This has all the classic signs of a video driver needing updating.

I can go for days without this happening, but there will be probably a temporary black screen, maybe coming back on its own, maybe coming back after a Ctrl+Alt+Del + cancel.

The characters on the taskbar and browser chrome will be "hatched" or "jagged", basically unreadable. Some other apps don't show this. Today, the readability of characters was actually alternating from readable to unreadable.

Recently it's been happening more frequently. Trying to think what might have changed. One thing is having external USB HDD now constantly attached (used for occasional backup), so I have disconnected to see if that's making it happen more often

The cure/workaround is a simple machine restart. The real cure will be if there is a driver issue.

  • Updates up-to-date
  • sfc /scannow run -- no issues
  • security: Windows Security scan results attached. Malwarebytes scan also shows no malware
  • Event Viewer: looked at various logs for any errors and hardware events and saw nothing: perhaps there is something I need to specifically look for
  • Executed Get-WindowsDriver -Online (using PowerShell 7.3, which I use for web dev build scripts). Output saved to attached text file. There are 3 with Class Name "Display" but not sure if the version numbers shown are up-to-date. In the past (pre-Win 10) the user had to make the extra effort to ensure device/HW driver up-to-date, but I'm assuming Win 11 does this much better.

Sounds like it's your display driver. OEMs such as Intel submit drivers (including BIOS updates) to Microsoft who in turn, once they have tested and approved them, will offer them through Windows Update. These will appear in the Optional updates section, have a look there for for those Display drivers.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that I was aware of Advanced Options > Optional Updates where those drivers are. I looked at that some time ago, found there were hardware and other drivers, installed them.

Just checked them and it says there are no updates at this time.

Thanks.
