Solved Updating KB5015814

I went to "www.catalog.update.microsoft.com", entered KB5015814 in "Search" box, then downloaded the specific file (4 choices given: 2 for Windows 11 and 2 for Windows 10) and installed update with no problems! Had encountered the 0x80073701 error code on several failed tries prior to this successful update.

Other users were reporting problems with this update, and also KB5015818 for 22H2. I think there's been a problem with Window Update this last week or so.

I successfully installed 2022-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 for x64-based Systems (KB5015814) on July 12 when it was offered. It has worked without incident on my hardware listed below in "My Computer".

It installed on my laptop running Windows 11 Pro when it was offered as well but would not install on my desktop PC. Several retries with 0x80073701 error code until I downloaded and successfully installed it from the Microsoft catalog website. Go figure?

This is all very annoying. I have tried at least 20 times over the last nine days to install KB5015814 on my fully compliant W11 Pro desktop, and have tried all of the credible suggestions I've seen here and on the Net, and the thing still won't install, which means I'm still stuck at 22000.739.

This update installed without any hiccups on my not-quite-compliant W11 Pro, and that machine updated to 22000.795 without any problems.

If anyone sees a *new* possible solution to this stubborn refusal of W11 Pro 22000.739 to accept 5015814 and update from 739 to 795, PLEASE post your solution here. If you do a Web search, you'll find that there are a GREAT MANY W11 users who can't get 5015814 to install.

(BTW, I've done an in-place twice, and the direct download of the msu three times, and troubleshooting, cleaning up, SFC and DISM and nothing kicks this thing enough to make Windows accept the installation. I will admit that I've deleted nothing from the CBS Logs folder, because I have no idea what I can and can't delete there.)

Any real, working solution will earn my undying gratitude.

Dear Wisewiz,

Are you running Malwarebytes on your PC? If so, then I saw a thread somewhere that the guy said he had to turn off Malwarebytes in order to install this Update.

Been there; done that. Killed MWB before attempting install every time I attempted install. Twice I went so far as to uninstall MWB. No effing luck.

Good thinking, Gary, but no, I'm not using any third-party customizers. After all these months of using the new "features," I find that I'm fairly happy with 11 (but with a lot of adjustments to the registry). Thanks for thinking about the problem, even though you haven't had it.

Would you consider going back to the switch that appears for you (but for nobody else) just above your original post, and changing the control to Not Yet Solved? Too many of us are still fighting the problem. Just a thought.

Seems to be coming in very slowly. Ten minutes to get to 5%. Hmmm.

Jumped from 5% to 75%. Ooookay.

I'm on 22H2, kb5015818 failed, and I can't update to 22622 builds through WU either. Been an ongoing issue for a week or more. I've seen many posts on here about updates failing recently that seemed to start around July 12th. It seems a lot of people are having similar issues/errors with Windows updates

Just to note, you'll always see a number of new threads regarding an CU failing to install, since that is usually the only time when users will attempt to update their systems.

This is not because of Windows Update or Microsoft, most updates fail because there is corruption on the user's machine; often, regarding parts of the registry or the Component Store (WinSxS). Every update failure is specific to that particular machine, you can have the same update failing on different machines for very different reasons.

How do you diagnose what is causing the update to fail to install? In most cases, you need to check the CBS log and check for error messages.

OK, here's what I did to beat this PITA: Got the files from UUP Dump (easier way is to get them from MS, but they aren't fully labelled as to version number on MS, while UUP Dump has all of the version numbers available, including yesterday's updated version). Waited patiently while the UUP downloader did its things. Used Rufus to put the ISO on a bootable USB flash. Hit setup.exe on the USB. Followed the standard procedure for an in-place upgrade, and this time, I chose to get all of the updates, even though @Brink suggests that this might be a possible blunder.

When I finished I had no updates needed and 832 in place. A few minor adjustments to put everything back the way I wanted it, and all was and is well.

If anyone needs any help with getting this done, I'll be happy to help. Either post in this thread or PM me.

I tried this but got the same fail message 0x80073701

Try my basic method in #18 above. If you are a newcomer to either UUP Dump or Rufus, just ask questions here as they arise. It's really quite easy, once you know what you're doing. And since the problem update is included in the updated system, the error can't recur.
