Hello Forum,

In File Explorer, I have my user account showing up under desktop.
It probably is a shadow/shortcut/double but it shouldn't be there and it all looks pretty messy...

I don't know for how long this has been the case, but since this user account doesn't have "Music" and "Videos" in it, I suspect it dates back from when I upgraded to Windows11 and all of a sudden these 2 folders appeared. As I don't have any music and the few videos I have are amongst my photos, stored in "Pictures" in the photo album of the event they belong to, I deleted those folders. Also this user account has a folder named "Desktop" with my desktop icons in it.

Another issue: "Libraries" shows up (not in this user account but in "the real" Desktop), although I unchecked the box "show libraries" in File Explorer's "options", "view".

I don't fiddle around with user accounts, as from experience I know you can really mess up your laptop if you do things wrong. So I could use some expert advice.
I hope someone here can help.
Thank you.

Judith

Welcome to the forum.
In file explorer, desktop-right click on your user account-select properties-does it indicate it is a shortcut? If so, you can delete it.

On the real desktop, right click on libraries-properties. Does it also show as a shortcut?
Anything that is a shortcut can be safely deleted.
A screenshot would be helpful if this is not the case.

Hi Glasskuter,

Something went wrong with an earlier reply. I'll rewrite it.

Here Judith (in Desktop):
File Explorer1.jpg

my normal Judith account:
File Explorer3.jpg

Library, and now that I look at it again I also notice "Camera Roll" which I also deleted at some point in the past (every update of Windows =>more stuff I never use, and useful things that change or disappear like Notedpad...) :File Explorer4.jpg

And finally regedit:

Regedit1.jpg

I hope you can make any sense out of what happened, or actually know how to fix what went wrong.
Thank you in advance.

Wow, that is totally messed up, huh? The way I see it is somehow your user folders have been moved from their default location. I can not guess what caused it, but I can suggest how I would fix it if it were me. I would make a new user account to straighten it out.

To make a new user account:
Go to settings-accounts-family & other users. Make a new local user account with a name slightly different from your current account. (Be sure to make it an administrative account, NOT a standard account) To do this click the drop arrow to the right of newly established account and change account type.

NOTE: You cannot copy or move files directly from one user profile to another without running into permission problems so do this.

1. From your old account- Insert a usb or external drive. Make folders on the drive for documents, downloads, music, pictures, videos and desktop. COPY your personal files from your current user profile into these folders. You probably won't need it but also copy the appdata folder to the drive.

2. Log out of old account and log in to new account.

3. Windows will ask you to create a password and then build the desktop for the new account.

4. COPY the files you saved to the external drive into the corresponding folders in the new account. (not appdata)

In the new account you will have to change any personal settings you had made in the old account which is a pain in the rear, but it is what it is. When you get the new user account like you want it, delete your old user account. Settings-accounts-family and other users-click the drop arrow to the right and remove.

If you currently use a Microsoft account, you can change the new user account to a Microsoft account after the old account is deleted.

Well, I suspected something like this, my "Judith" account is empty (except for AppData) and regedit has a line saying "migration"... It indicates my stuff got "migrated".

And I also expected that it wouldn't take 2 secs to fix. When I was writing you I actually already was copying my personal folders to a USB stick (it's still running, lots of GB...). Just to be safe to have a copy, because if I lock myself out of an account or deleting/changing the wrong thing, all will be lost forever. I usually make back-ups with an external portable hard drive, but I don't like it, as I cannot see/select single files. They are all wrapped and bundled. It takes all night to make a back-up of my whole laptop too, although I can select (of course) to only back-up some items and not all. But I find the thing not practical at all. I once was looking for 1 single file, it took me all day to find it, going through all the rar files. So I'll just do this the manual and long way.

What would happen to files on my D:\ drive ? It has 106GB stored on it... Would I still be able to access those files if I delete my user account or are they part of my user account as well?

Then you are using the wrong backup program. I suggest you look into Macrium Reflect Free Reflect Free Edition
Scroll down to "Backup at home" and select Reflect 8 Free.

With Macrium you can mount an image backup and have access to individual files within the image
What would happen to files on my D:\ drive ?
What files do you have on D? Did you move your personal folders to this drive? If so, that could be part of your problem if it was done incorrectly. Post a screenshot of D contents.

I suppose D is part of my Judith account as well, so I would lose access to those files. In that case I cannot use a USB stick (it's done now with my personal folders on C). I can't afford another back-up program at the moment.

On D I stock photos, and only photos, but lot's of them. But there are strange log there of May 21th...

oh I see it's for free, sorry. I'll have to look into that, if the free version gives enough space.

No you would not lose your photo files. Since I do not know for sure exactly how you moved photos to D, I would disconnect the D drive before deleting the old account and then reconnect it afterwards. As long as the D drive is disconnected, removing the old account cannot delete the files.

What do you mean by disconnect?

My laptop has: C = SSD and D = HDD (and E = CD-DVD and F = USB, which obviously are removable). And I have my back-up on a portable HDD.
My D is more or less an "extra" archive room where I store things I do not regularly use: older photos. The regular files and more recent photos are on C. I move them from my C drive to D, so I suppose there are in my user account. Whatever I do on this laptop, I'm always in my user account (with admin rights) and am the only person using the laptop.

I also see that Macrium Reflect has nothing to do with space. It is not a physical item, but a program. As I understand it, it will copy to and organize the storage on whatever (external) device, but files can be easily accessable/viewed. But I would hate to go through the process to copying all of my xxx GB on C and D using a new program if I can avoid it. With my current back-up facility I can manually copy to my portable HDD, in which case I can see individual files as they are, non reduced nor bundled. They get wrapped and bundled when I use the automatic function. I can create the exact same folders and files as I have now on my laptop, view them and access them. I did that for my D drive already (making regularly back-ups of C + Windows Image and only once in a while of my whole pc, as it takes so long). But I need to check if I've made any changes to files on D since my last manual back-up. And I will manually also copy my personal folders on C to this external HDD, so if I have to create a new user account I can recopy all of it from there. This HDD is safer than a USB-stick, which sometimes gets faulty.

First I need to be sure I have all my stuff in a safe place, so it will take time before I dare do anything to my user account.
I appreciate you thinking with me Betty Boop! I'll be back.

Please backup the files to another drive. I would suggest an external drive. Without backs once a file/folder is gone, it's gone.

Do something for me. Go to the explorer screen in your first screenshot. Right click on your 'pictures' folder. Click properties. Under the location tab, where does it show the location of that folder?
Then do the same thing with the 'pictures' folder in the second and third screenshots.
Report back what you find.

@Winuser, that's what I was afraid of. I just copied all my personal folders on C and D to my external HDD in exactly the same folder hierarchy.

@glasskuter,
Judith account on desktop = C:\Users\jmver\Pictures
My "normal" Judith account = (which no longer contains pictures, or any personal files/folders, only AppData) C:\Users\Judith
My jmver account = C:\Users\jmver\Pictures

Library:

File Explorer5.jpg

No location, but what's interesting here, is OneDrive. As far as I can remember I never used that. Could I have clicked on that once (thus uploading files) and then eliminated the folder? I wonder... It seems highly unlikely as I don't like to have my stuff in the Cloud. It also shows Music and Videos, as well as Camera Roll, which I am sure I never used (don't even know what's it for), which I all deleted from my Judith account at some point in time.

There's a loop in this folder, it shows documents (grey icon) twice, with all my docs under both both folders, and then a yellow icon which gives a OneDrive error.

It seems like a big mess...
I have to go out for half an hour or so but when I'll be back, I can try things, as I now have all my personal stuff backed-up.

@Winuser, that's what I was afraid of. I just copied all my personal folders on C and D to my external HDD in exactly the same folder hierarchy.

@glasskuter,
Judith account on desktop = C:\Users\jmver\Pictures
My "normal" Judith account = (which no longer contains pictures, or any personal files/folders, only AppData) C:\Users\Judith
My jmver account = C:\Users\jmver\Pictures

No location, but what's interesting here, is OneDrive. As far as I can remember I never used that. Could I have clicked on that once (thus uploading files) and then eliminated the folder? I wonder... It does look like you have a mess. I think the reason you are seeing OneDrive is because you are looking in the Libraries. The same thing happens when I right click on a folder in Libraries. Try right clicking on the folders under This PC.

It looks to me this whole thing started when you either changed to or from a microsoft account to a local account or vice versa. Judith is a local account name. Jmver is the first 5 letters of your email account that would have been used with a microsoft account. To complicate matters more, it appears at one time you were syncing with onedrive which looks to have since been removed.

Your pictures should be in D:\Pictures and not have anything to do with your user account. I would do like @glasskuter suggested and create a new user as an administrator. When all is setup and working and you know for sure that the new user has administrator rights, delete the old user. You have to have at least one user that is an administrator.

I have some pictures (recent ones) on C and the majority on D. But all is copied on an external drive now.

@glasskuter, you could have a point there. When I installed this laptop (in 2019?) I was new to Windows10, and also it was stressy (I wasn't at home, I set it up whilst abroad). I remember that the first thing that happened was that MS asked me to create an account. I don't recall if I did that. But since jmver indeed refers to my email I may have clicked yes initially (thinking it was mandatory? quite insidious the way they do this...) and then backed-out of the MS account. I don't have one at the moment, don't want to. The 2nd thing was trying to find a way to may Cortana shut-up.

I do not really recollect how long I have this Judith account under my desktop. Could it be it has been there from the start??? I know I always found File Explorer messy with these pre-setup folders and eliminated those that I don't use (but they do not totally disappear, so I suppose you shouldn't touch them). I also disabled Quick access, but I read somewhere you can eliminate it altogether (which I will try to, as soon as I - hopefully - clear this mess up). Back in the old days, you could set up your folders any way you wanted (are was logic to you) without being imposed a way to store things.

I'll get going with your advice.
We'll see how it goes and if I have to put whatever is on D back on there too.

You are so correct. There is a correct way to move the default folders to another drive but you never delete them. From what you posted, I do not think deleting your old user account will affect the photos you have stored on the D drive at all, but it's good you have them backed up just in case because with the mess of a file structure you have, anything can happen. Good luck.

Thanks :)

Oh I see I did make a 2nd account (probably created for reasons for security should one account fail). It has admin rights too. I don't ever want to have an account without admin rights (experience from the past > your computer doesn't let you do a thing if you don't have admin rights - ridiculous if you're the only person working on it).

But I'll create a new one so I will continue to have 2 user accounts.
