Yep - Macrium Reflect is perfect for this.

See tutorial from sister site

It is slightly out of date as new version is out but still easy enough to follow.

Yes, whether you clone a disk or make an image of it, Macrium will copy everything that's in the partitions you back up.

Macrium themselves have some video 'Webinars' that demonstrate the process.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

You have also selected disk 2 as a source disk. Uncheck it, select disk 1 and you will be able to image disk 1 to disk 2.

@flashh4

All four of those partitions on Disk 1 are necessary to boot Windows.
Here's a picture guide for backing up that drive...

Step #1 you will see "four" checkmarks. One for each partition on Disk 1
Step #2 is where you will save the backup. Where mine says: G:\ you will need to put... D:\
Step #3 is what you will "name" the backup. I usually put the date.
The "size" of your backup will be approx. 50GB at default settings.

It'll take about 5 minutes to make the backup.
It'll take about the same if you ever need to restore from the backup.
You can do this. :)

This image shows the backup history for taking a full system image of my OS partitions every day.
It currently takes about 16 - 18 minutes to run to completion.

mr #02.png
This image shows the 'File & Folder' backups that I take. At the begining of a month, I take a 'full' image of my data partitions; subsequemtly, for the remainder of the month I take a 'differential' (only backing up changes) backup every day.

The number of backups you can retain is only limited by the size of drive you are backing up to; I have a 2TB backup dive, of which approx 1.5TB is currently 'free'. You can configure your minimum free space that remains on the drive, and when this limit is reached, Reflect starts to delete the oldest backups to make room for the backup you are trying to take.

The really good point about Reflect is that when you want to do a restore you can overwrite your current partitions completely OR you can restore to a completely unformatted drive, creating your partitions to match the partitions you backed up previously. For a 'file & folder' you can restore everything or individual files if you so choose,

I can restore my full OS backups in about 8 - 10 minutes

Partition 2 on your disk 1 is a 16MB unformatted partition. This is correct, it is the Microsoft Reserved partition (MSR) that will be found on every GPT formatted disk. This has always been there, but is hidden from view in Disk Management. Macrium will include it in the 'partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows'.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop.

With W 11 I was finally able to do a full backup on external HHD with Macrium and on a second internal HHD with windows backup.
I was never able to do so on W 10.
Does anybody knows how to get the tray Icon to work? It is enable on taskbar setting but it does not shows up.

Don't forget also you can mount the backup image (whether you took an image or cloned a full disk as an image) as a disk - then browse contents with file explorer so you can recover data without having to restore if you just need missing or accidentally deleted files. Note though it's a read only process which is a good thing as you really don't want to corrupt reliable backups.

Cheers

Don't forget to make the rescue media (USB)

You can also put the rescue media into the logon; see picture; Macrium has PE with it.

Is this the norm?
