VPN effecting my NAS

Good afternoon.

I recently got a new NAS and there's some kind of issue with it not showing up while having my VPN connected.

I'm using the Synology DS220+NAS and ExpressVPN, I can connect to the NAS via the domain name but it fails to appear in network or devices unless my VPN is disconnected.

I've noticed that it has it's own virtual network adaptor which is set to public network instead of private (like my wifi), I'm wondering if this is causing the issue? Probelm is I can't find a way to change it. I can view it in settings but doesn't seem to have the option like the Wifi connection.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Update:

Just in case someone's having the same issue. After conferring with ExpressVPN and running through some possibilities, it seems that un-checking "Stop all internet traffic if the VPN disconnects unexpectedly" in the app solves the issue.

How this effects it I have no idea but it could be some kind of bug. It sucks to have to disable this option, but they noted it down so hopefully there's a possibility of a future fix.

You need to enable VPN Split tunelling - or it might be called something else depending on your VPN -- I use NordVPN where you can select that certain apps e.g File explorer etc are not under VPN control when the VPN is connected such as access to your local LAN drives (which would include a NSA too).

For Nordvpn it works like this (for other VPN's check also similar feature)
