Hi Forum members. I could do with some help.

In Feb 2022 I upgraded my Acer A-517 laptop to W11 Home, version 21h2 (22000.2538).

It was only recently that I noticed that new versions of Windows are available, notably 23H2. Version 22H2 never got proposed.
The last cumulative update is from 2023-10 (KB4023057)... The last Security Intelligence Update from today (KB2267602).
Checking for new updates proposed me 23H2, but it keeps failing.

1711729156536.png

BITS is set to Manual
Windows Update Services is set to Automatic
Windows Update Medic Sercive is set to Manual

Sfc /scannow found no integrity violations
DSIM /Online /Cleanup-image /CheckHealth and /ScanHealth found nothing wrong
I tried net stop/net start wuauserv, bits, cryptsvc
I renamed SoftwareDistribution and Catroot to old

Updating with the W11 Installation Assistant also continues to fail. It stops at 22% with the message:
1711729207147.png

Yesterday in waking up my laptop from sleep I got a BSOD, error code VIDEO_TDR failure, nvlddmkmsys. Restarting helped. This morning in starting my laptop from "off" I got the same thing.
I noticed:

1711729313051.png
1711729722088.png

I subsequently installed all optional driver updates in Windows Update, but to no avail.
I installed Intel-Driver-and-Support-Assistant-Installer, which found no new or missing drivers.
I have Intel(R) Display Audio (IntcDAud.sys, V10.26.0.6, 1/8/2019) and Realteck HD Audio (SST) (RTKVHD64.sys, V6.0.8907.1, 3/3/2020).

Also, I am still using Office 2007 (yeah yeah...). Would that be prohibiting updating and also, can I still continue using Office 2007? I may need a new version of Office in future, but I'd rather not do that now.

Can anyone come up with a solution so that I may upgrade my laptop to 23H2 without losing my settings, programs, files, c.q. without a clean install etc?

I am just a regular user, by no means super computer savvy...
Thanks for any help.

Judith

Almost posted incorrect information about

W10 21H2 offered no update 21H2>22H2s and now fails to upgrade to 23H2

until I read the My Computer and saw it actually is for W11. I was going to say there is no Version 23H2 upgrade for Win10, EOL is Oct. 14, 2025.

You can edit the thread title if you want by editing your first post.
Then use the Enablement Package as wisely suggested by @Ghot.

Ghot,

Thank you for your reaction.

I read that the enabledment package is meant to go from 22H2 to 23H2. I do no have/never got proposed 22H2.
Also rerequisite is October 31, 2023—KB5031455 (OS Builds 22621.2506 and 22631.2506) or a later cumulative.

I have neither of the 2.
So how to get those or where to find?

@Judiver,

And you have nothing under Optional Updates?
If no, I would do an in-place upgrade.

No other pending or optional updates anywhere except 23H2.

Being you're still on 21H2, as @OAT suggested, just do an in-place upgrade to 23H2. I recommend using the MCT to download 23H2 and save it as an iso file. Then mount the iso file and run setup from there to do the in-place upgrade.

Unfortunately the Windows Update reset didn't work. I had tried most of the steps that are in that bat.file manually already.
WindowsUpdate stopped at 45% (which is further than before), and through the InstallerAssistant at 22% (same as yesterday).

However, I've been looking at the Events Viewer. It appears my system indeed tried to install 22H2 numerous times as of 10 August last year, but failed everytime:

1711812262716.png

I did some further research on this error code and came across an interesting French article. Especially the last phrase is interesting:
'In addition, machines equipped with the Intel SST audio driver cannot yet benefit from Windows 11 22H2 because of a bug that can generate a blue screen of death on the computer.'
My machine has this driver. In some way it is strange because I've only experienced a BSOD pointing to the audio driver on 28 and 29 March 2024. Not before.

@wabbit & OAT
I tried installing 23H2 with the MediaCreationTool. Mounted the ISO but the installation failed. As it was pretty scary for someone like me (not my daily cup of coffee and I only have I laptop, I cannot mess up...), I used this tutorial:
I followed it step by step, except for deleting the files in the appraisseres.dll, as my laptop fits the requirements for the upgrade.
It started installing but broke off after 8% or so.

Is there anything else I could try?

The article you referred to is about 2+ years old, il se fait donc vieux de la feuille and I would think Redmond has corrected the issue by now.
Just mount the ISO as done before and run the setup.exe and see where that takes you. No need to follow any other step.

OAT I know the article is old but I have 21H2 and this driver and experiencing BSOD, 2 times. Oh well.

I tried installing 23H2 with a mounted ISO. Installing failed at 8%.

OAT I know the article is old but I have 21H2 and this driver and experiencing BSOD, 2 times. Oh well.

I tried installing 23H2 with a mounted ISO. Installing failed at 8%.
OK, why don't you go in devices and fully remove that audio driver.
Then try the upgrade again, if that fails, an installation from scratch might be your only solution.

@OAT

Before I remove a driver I would like to be sure I am removing the right thing.

The error in Other devices/Detection Verification was pointing to IntelAudio.

In my Device Manager I have the following for sound/video/games:

1711900824445.png

And in System Devices I have this:

1711900575228.png

So which/what do you suggest me to remove? I can Update Driver, Disable device and Uninstall device, but you are suggesting to remove a driver, not a device...
Also can I get it back after (hopefully) updating Windows? How?

This morning I noticed that in the Control Panel "HD Audio Manager" showed up but wasn't not working/not leading to a pop-up. I got it back with the Sound troubleshooter. I actually heard a sound but chose to say it was "bad" instead of "good". After this the HD Audio Mngr worked again. I also had Micro and Speakers in my Device Manager.

Later in the day I tried to update to 23H2 again. It failed again. But also HD Audio Manager had stopped working again, no micro/speakers. This update definitively does something to the sound on my machine.

I am afraid that if I do update to 23H2, I will have no micro. And I will be needing a micro in the near future.

@Judiver
You can't be the sole user to have issues with your sound system on your Acer.
It seems you might need some support from them.
Have you tried their support forum?

So it is Windows11 version 10.
So confusing...
