W11 really unpredictable on CPU requirements A total Lottery ???

Guessing what CPU's run W11 seems purely like a Lottery

while both an i5 and i7 (both more powerful and much later processors) needed a bit of fiddling to install -- had to do via a VM and convert back to real !!

I don't think this would be a good time to go buying new hardware yet unless you really need it -- probably the best time would be to forget Black Friday and hope for some cheap deals in the post XMAS sales when W11 requirements are a bit more clear and settled.

The separation point is nothing to do with the i3, i5, or i7 or even Celeron or Core designation

It is the generation of processor, which basically designates the actual chip architecture. basically if you have an 8th generation Intel Chip or a 2nd generation AMD Rysen chip, you are good to go.

Yes there is a little blurring of the lines due to some of the 7th generation Intel processors actually having an early version of the 8th generation architecture and for this you have to check the individual unit on Microsoft's list

You can run 11 on a 64 bit potato doesn't mean you'll be able to use all features and as long as you don't mind that it's not a big deal.

That machine comes from 2016 !!! so generation will be way back from 7th or 8th gen -- maybe even before 5th gen !!!!
Anyway it works !!!!

The potential issue with older generation processors is that they may not support future changes / requirements for Windows 11 which was always the reason quoted by Microsoft for the requirements

What these potential changes are and if and when they are due - Only Microsoft knows, (plus a select band of engineering partners ).

Microsoft have themselves released a work around to the requirements for Windows Update to install on unsupported Processors in the form of a registry update so the update should work for most, but obviously at the user's risk

Sounds like the same policy that's been used since x-p

Have a four year old dell with tpm 2 and secure boot but only 6th/7th gen processor - wondering if it will work. Is there an actual list of processors?

Ridiculous that four year old computers aren’t eligible for upgrade.

They will work, and there are several ways to force the install. including one from Microsoft themselves - They are all explained in The tutorials section or in various threads on the forum.

All of the compatible processors are those built with a new Processor Architecture that allows them to to work with potential new technologies that may be introduced during the lifetime of Windows 11. If these changes do take place then they may cause non compatible systems to stop working, of course the new technologies may not be used or if they are they may not cause any issues with a specific processor.

I think Microsoft were just being cautious, and the continuation of Windows 10 was included for the same reason, to give users a choice.

Only time will tell If Microsoft were being over or under cautious with the limits but all things being equal the option is there to upgrade or not

One other thing, the change in the processor architecture was caused by the Spectre malware and it's clones and the potential added functionality was a side effect of this change, which is a reason for the short time frame

Did you try "Device security\Kernel isolation\Memory integrity" in in Defender (Windows security) ?

Or "Ransomware protection \ Folder acces control" ?

At the beginning, everything seems fine. But after a while, more and more (elder and younger) software is blocked. Finally nothing does'nt work anymore.

We haven't seen everything yet, what WIN 11 brings with it !

If an Ivy Bridge Celeron (not i5 or i7...) can run and passes the check, that's a lottery winner indeed.

California felt they had a good reason to decree that only trucks made in the last three years are allowed.
Look at what the result of that was.

Its a shame that the instruction sets built into older generations of processors cannot have the required security added.
