Airpod pro 3 - Universal translator!!!

So Iphone 17 air does not have a nanosim slot, and the event plays that up as an advantage!

That may be ok in US but in rest of the world, many service providers have yet to adopt esims.

In the UK, many of us have a service provider contract from Vodafone, O2, EE etc. and generally esims are available.

However, a lot of use use a second pay and go type sim as a dual backup, often from an MVNO and a lot of these have yet to have esims.

OK, I guess if you can afford an iphone 17 air, not having a nanosim slot is not really a big deal?

Of course esims are not available in China, so Apple are obviously not targeting the Chinese market.

For those of us with iphones (11 and greater):

For older iphones, it is expected there will be a new IOS 18.7 (cuurently 18.6.2) bug fix update in parallel with IOS26.

As I have an Iphone 14, it is not obvious if we will have to install ios 18.7 before we install ios 26 (I am guessing we do not?).

There is no translator in the world that can handle lady hairdressers speech from Fraserburgh or Peterhead in NE Scotland.

Yesterday, Apple release the final Beta version of IOS 26 (IOS 26 RC - Release Candidate).

This is essentially the version that will go live on 15th September although some minor bugs amy get fixed on official release over next few days.

So I decided to update to the IOS 26 RC version from 18.6.2.

It has a lot of new features (95#% I will never use).

The three key features that are useful personally are

1) Live Captions now available in UK and few other countries - not just US.
I listened to a podcast with live captions active and its accuracy speech to text was quite good.


My only gripe is that it does not work if iphone is connected to MFI hearibg aids which use Apples proprietary low energy bluetooth.

Basically, I had to route sound to iphone speaker and listen normally but the quality is much lower plus affected by background noise.

I found a workaround by connecting my hearing aid streamer which I have to use on my pc which connects to conventional bluetooth, and streams to my hearing aids i.e. I am not using the direct MFI connection.

2) Call Screening - if you get a call from an unknown number, iphone asks caller for details and reason for call whuch you have to accept before iphone connects caller to you directly?

How useful is this - in the end people will lie to get connected to you I guess.

3) on hold calling - iphone will detect if you are in a call queue and will call you when caller at other end answers. Again not sure how useful this is as my experience is if you are in a call queue and caller answers, they often only give you a few seconds to answer before hanging up.

Even if you install this RC version, it will get updated to release version on 15th Sept.

I guess very few will bother install RC version but I was bored (Scotland back to its usually crapoy weather), so I decided to give it a go. I had tried it a while back but the earlier Beta versions were buggy but thus RC version seems quite stabke.

Fingers crossed, the battery usage seems ok - earlier beta versions allegedly drained battery quicker than IOS 18.6.x.
