Was the machine you upgraded a supported device for W11? Or did you need to use workarounds to get it to upgrade?

I've had issues in WD when upgrading using the hybrid W10 install media with a W11 install.wim. Mainly Windows Security when it did open was completely blank. Defender could be shown to be running normally though by testing with the EICAR test file.

Each time, a subsequent in-place upgrade using a W11 ISO and the 'delete appraiseres.dll' workaround fixed the issue.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Hi there

Thanks for suggestions

I got round the problem -- I just did a Macrium backup of a VMWare W11 build on another machine, restored via Macrium 8 to a physical laptop, run the fix boot problems and redploy to new hardware and it's all fine !!!

I can't be bothered with running the updates again from W10 and re0installing. Bonus also is that I now have Office 2021 LTSC installed as well.

That Macrium 8 is well worth paying for -- makes a doddle out of converting Virtual machines back to physical ones again !!! (and the other way around too if needs be).

Bedtime now

cheers
