Hi folks

Seems there's a load of brilliant International programs on the UK's Walter Presents on the All 4 Channel. Any idea of what the format is that is downloadable and viewable with typical media players. I also would love to see the one about Hacking the UK's infrastructure called "The Undeclared War" -- I can get almost any channel I like here but UK's Channel 4 seems to have got more security than the CIA / Mossad. !!!

Cheers
jimbo

Yeah I don't think he's asking how to steal it mate 😂😂 I believe he can access the page, that has the download button for it on the all 4 website..and is wondering what format it would be in. Holy handcuffs😂

Hi folks
I don't condone any form of pirating / stealing intellectual content.
Contact Channel 4 and pay for any content available to you at your location, or don't watch it
Hi there
Not wanting to pirate in any shape or form. Sorry if I gave that impression.

This content is freely available In the clear via Satellite on the Astra system on "Freesat" . No sign in or anything required -- just a decent dish if outside UK and R.O.I. Satellite is on Astra at 28.2 E.

Cheers
jimbo

So if it's "freely available", why not just download it to try. If it's a "standard" video format, any half-decent media player should cope.

Channel 4 supports streaming on their All4 platform, which they advertise as the biggest channel streaming service in the UK. Unfortunately I think that this is geographically locked - but may be downloadable where available for streaming in a standard format

In the absence of a suitable Apple/Android device, here's an interesting challenge for those spare moments: Windows Subsystem for Android™️

Windows Subsystem for Android > install Amazon App Store > etc.

Have fun!

OK, so now we're talking about "capturing" streaming, totally different from "downloading". Whole different kettle of fish.

Hi there
Remember some people's ist lang here isn't always Eng (although I did get Engineering doctorate from Imperial college in London --Elec Eng).

The problem as I made out (probably not clearly enough) wasn't accessing the content legally but how to capture the video from the satellite to save for later playback.

I've since solved partially the problem with a decent hardware video capture device which can schedule record but of course it's "Real Time" which is a drag and records in m2ts format which isn't a problem for play back on most multi-media players - in any case that's easy enough to convert to mkv or mp4. So marking as solved now.

Thanks to everybody anyway for suggestions.

Cheers
jimbo

If the signal is not encrypted, I would think you would just need a device to capture the output from the receiver. If the output is through a A/V cable a VCR, DVD recorder or a capture card should work. Your first post does make it sound like you want to download the videos from the internet.

I'm sure there's some add-on software that can be time set (scheduled) to start the recording. Maybe look at setting up Windows Task scheduler timing.

And once captured, easy to m2ts > mkv/mp4/et al. Good solution(s).

I'm sure there's some add-on software that can be time set (scheduled) to start the recording. Maybe look at setting up Windows Task scheduler timing.

And once captured, easy to m2ts > mkv/mp4/et al. Good solution(s).
Hi there

The software for the capture device does have a "Scheduled record" - but it's essentially just a "Capture" device, there's no tuner etc so the computer has to be connected to the Sat box, and the channel pre-tuned manually.

I'm using a Techmate Sat box which does have a "Switch channel" but it relies on being able to pick up an epg from the satellite. No prob with German / French/Belgian etc stations like SAT1, ARD, ZDF, BRT1, RTL etc but doesn't seem to be available on Freesat. Note I'm not talking about "Intelligent boxes" such as "Sky Q" or internet delivered content. This is streaming signals in the clear from a satellite via an LNB and a Dish.

This Sat box also allows for 2 cams / viewing card slots but works perfectly for FTA channels.

Anyway problem 100% solved. I'm surprised though BBC makes content available on this satellite unencrypted as one would expect to have a BBC TV license --Surprised the BBC doesn't look at this as a form of revenue -- loads of old archived programs overseas viewers would gladly pay to see.

I have a 2.0 metre rotatable dish which is easily big enough to "capture" this satellite.

Cheers
jimbo

The BBC is funded by the government and uses some of the revenue raised by the licence fee for programming. Channel 4 is currently provided by a charter written in a time when streaming was just starting, or at least a planned option.

Channel 4 is currently being investigated by the government for selling off to the private sector (apparently the Party fund is running low :sarc:), which is likely to be affecting their security model

Channel 4 and other channels also buy in content from external providers which can have heavily restricted limits on what can be broadcast live, in replay and streamed on demand

As an example Channel 4 is the terrestrial broadcaster who currently have rights for broadcasting F1 (British GP Live the rest delayed replay, and I think none for On demand streaming ) If you want to stream F1 I believe Sky are the only legitimate option and even this may be limed to theit "Glass" platform

Hi there
Thanks for explanation -- just seems a shame when BBC is a decent respectable world brand with a huge archive that it can't or has problems getting what would be a really good revenue stream for them.

Some of those geo rights also seem a bit bonkers -- 2 pubs in Ireland just on opposite sides of the street just 70 metres from each other -- one in ROI can show all Sat 15.00 footie games via SKY quite legally, the other in N.I isn't officially allowed to (but of course they do !!!).

Anyway there wasn't any intent to Pirate or redistribute any of this material -- purely for viewing in my residence.

Cheers
jimbo

The BBC do use their generated content as an income stream, the nature series, and lavish costume dramas provide good earnings the US BBC channel is also very profitable as are some smaller (often former colonial) markets

The Irish issue is basically down to the total cockup over Brexit - which could even get worse :steam:
