I have an AMD APU as well. It's running Windows 10. I'd like to put 11 on it, but i fear the same as you do.

Why do you fear that?

Here is AMD's take: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/pa-400

There have been some relatively minor issues in the past, most of which would have hardly been noticeable outside of benchmarks, but apparently they have been fixed.

I don't have an AMD APU. If I did, and wanted to try 11, I'd image the Windows 10 installation, and then try 11. If 11 gave me issues, it'd be simple to revert. You could also use the built-in update reversion feature in Windows. That'd give you a 10 day window to go back. (I believe that can be extended.)

IMHO, periodically imaging the OS drive is one of the best PC protection options available. If you don't have imaging software and a drive to save the image onto, I strongly recommend getting them.

I'm no expert on this but I what I imagine will happen is it will be generally the same as any other Win11 that's force-installed on any other unsupported CPU. The experiences I've read seem to say it works OK.

But don't expect it to continue that way. A major update could 'break' it on your unsupported hardware or, hopefully, MS not allow it to update to prevent that. But I also wouldn't expect it to operate any better than Win10 does not if you're trying to get the old system past laggy performance.

My System One had Windows 10, then took the upgrade to windows 11 at launch. I don't see any obvious lag, it behaves the same in 11 as it did in 10. But then I'm not a gamer, so not pushing it to its limits.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

That's a point.

I didn't notice that the OP has an A8-3870, which is not on the supported list for 11.

The main issue I see is that AMD only has legacy drivers for it. The latest ones they offer are for Windows 8.1. However, if they work under Windows 10, they're probably good under 11.

I am running Win11 on Ryzen 7 1800X and it says it's unsupported, but no problems

Truth is..I've been debating force installing it on an old AM3+ w/FX-6300 procesor system I have which is currently running Win10 perfectly. It's not a daily use machine, mostly I kept it around for nostalgia so Win 11 isn't important. I would just like to try it to see if it works.

Then, for gosh sake, TRY IT! Aren't we all just experimenting anyway?

Just like every OS since Win-95, Win-11 takes a little fussing, tweaking and tuning to get it running just right whether on the very latest hardware or on really OLD stuff like I run.
And if MS Updates bother you, then just Shut Them OFF. "StopUpdates10.exe" works a treat!

Install to a VHDX file. That's how I am testing my hardware with Windows 10. I have Windows 10 and it's running great, and I use the machine for running VM's and gaming. I don't see any reason yet to replace my Windows 10, but I wanted to know how it would work with Windows 11.

mkdir D:\win11-vhdx

Open Disk Management
Action > Create VHD, ensure you do a VHDX file;. I put mine in D:\win11-vhdx
I created a 100GB fixed disk
Right click on this new disk and initialize as GPT, and give it a drive letter ( I used drive F)

Mount Windows 11 iso (I used drive g)
Open cmd as admin
G:
cd sources
dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:G:\sources\install.wim (Get index of version you wish to install, I'm installing Windows 11 Pro which is index 6)
dism /Apply-Image /ImageFile:G:\sources\install.wim /index:6 /ApplyDir:F:\

Make a boot entry for Windows
bcdboot F:\Windows /d (the /d says to leave your current default boot entry intact, so it will still boot to the native windows install on your machine)

As a Computer Technician I have installed Windows 11 on many unsupported Intel and AMD computers. As long as you install the latest chipset (if applicable) and graphics drivers from AMD, the performance should be that of Windows 10 or better. Of course don't expect to find Windows 11 drivers, download Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 8.1 64-bit or even 7 and Vista 64-bit should be fine for really old systems. Many do the mistake to rely on Windows Update. Sure you see all drivers are installed automatically, nothing suspicious in Device Manager. Guess again, in some systems Windows Update fails to properly identify the GPU and it installs Microsoft Basic Display Adapter (aka plain VGA without any hardware acceleration). Once you install proper graphics drivers the performance almost doubles.
