Windows 11
Dear all

When buying a latop with pre-installed Windows 11.

1.
What version of MS Defender Antivirus does the laptop with pre-installed Windows 11 come with?
The newest / latest version of MS Defender the time Windows was installed?
A basic version of MS Defender?

2.
Does the MS defender version come with all the known malware signatures at the given time?
Or does it come with zero known malware signatures?

3.
When turning on the laptop for the first time and doing the initial setup.
Is Windows and MS Defender being updating in that proces?
Or is the update proces after the initial setup is finished?

Thank you

I'm guessing it depends on the manufacture date.

When setting up a new computer there is no way of knowing how long it was on a shelf before purchase, there will always be updates needed to get most-current and best to simply allow that to happen. It really doesn't take long.

Yes, but when in the proces is this happening?
Is this update happening in the background during the initial setup of Windows, where you select language, create profile etc.?
Or first after, when you login for the first time and see the Windows desktop?

It would be nice to know, if the first time I access Windows / see the desktop, that the MS Defender signature database is not at zero / defenseless, but it is moderately updated.

The OEMs install whatever is the latest release to OEM version of Windows at the time a device is built. This Windows includes Defender. This Defender has whatever definitions database was included with that particular version of windows when it was released from MS. It is not at zero.
It is updated to latest definitions within minutes. I can only shake my head that this would be of concern to you.

If it concerns you then once up and running and connected to the web type 'Virus and threat protection' into Windows search box and update manually there and then.

I understand your concerns but equally think of all the new PC's in your situation. No one seems to have a problem with Defender being slow to update and the PC suffering because of it.

Most will come with a pre-install of a trial of Mcafee that will need to be uninstalled first before Defender is active.
I have another thread regarding this topic.

You are welcome to try to answer it there, thank you:
