What will you use instead of WordPad (Poll)?

The default app for opening Rich Text Format (.rtf) files is currently WordPad. WordPad has been a part of the Windows Operating System since 1995. With Microsoft planning to depreciate WordPad, what do you intend to use to read/edit the .rtf files in the future?

I use Word since I bought the Windows 3.11 for Workgroups + Word bundle a few years ago.

I have no need for .rtf format.

I already use Notepad, Notepad++, Word and Word online, and Google Docs.

If you want to keep WordPad you can, while it's still there just copy it to another folder and use it from there when the time comes that it's removed.

I have MS Office on some of my PCs, and LibreOffice on the rest, both can use .rtf files if needed.

How’s the (IMO) unconstitutional clause about class action!. Thank God laws mean jack crap anymore and are just there to be pulled apart and spat on.

I just use Word and notepad/++. And with Notepad slowly progressing, who knows.

But, seriously I hate how customers are trapped into the arbitration clause. It's basically agree or look elsewhere. I once passed on buying a car because of that, only to find pretty much everyone is doing it, so you're stuck

This is where government regulation needs to step in, but of course everyone is also crying about regulation, so....

I actually can’t remember mate, I’ll have to look. I haven’t opened an RTF for probably a decade.

I don’t seem to have a plugin in my Notepad++ installer folder, so I must open them with word, which I have used since before I can remember. I know I never used word pad, that’s a certain.

If you want Notepad++ to render RTF, then you would need a plugin, similar the Preview HTML plugin or Markdown plugin. In fact, if you have a standalone RTF-to-HTML converter and the 32bit Notepad++, you could easily use that Preview HTML plugin to render it.

However, if you want a WYSIWYG editor for the RTF – so it completely hides the codes, and just allows you to apply bold styles, etc, while you’re editing the text – that’s called a word processor, and isn’t what Notepad++ was built for. Your copy of Windows probably came pre-installed with Wordpad, which can handle RTF. Or get a full-featured word processor, like Microsoft Word or LibreOffice could handle it with no problem.

But you can edit teh text, and even the control codes, of a RTF just fine in Notepad++, because it’s a text-based markup (like HTML, XML, Markdown, and others)

It's been so long since I used Notepad, I don't even remember what it looks like. Years ago I found Notepad++ and never looked back.

I still do some work with old 6800 based micro computers. I wrote a full two pass assembler in GAWK/SH and run it under Cygwin64. Part of it's operation includes self documentation of the 6800 source code, in ".rtf" format. Because the Cygwin64 home directory is visible from Windows, I can transparently develop my programs complete with their documentation. The ".rtf" file simply opens in Word (MS Office 2007). I use Notepad++ to edit the assembler and the 6800 source code under Windows, but run the GAWK/SH assembler under Cygwin64.

I also use Notepad++ to edit my Verilog simulation files. The simulator itself (Veriwell) runs under Cygwin64, but the waveform viewer (GTKWave) runs under Window. Again, it all works transparently.

I could use Notepad++ for writing HTML, CSS, and Javascript on my web site, but I find that HTML-Kit works better.

Why "Instead of" Wordpad? I've got it on 12 PC's, and it's not going anywhere!

I've been using it since Win-95, because it was a pretty nice little Word Processor, and it was FREE with each install of Windows.
It's always just THERE when I need to rip off a note, create a form or a sign, or Edit a Batch File. And there is nothing to buy, install or customize.

My first use of Wordpad was a long time ago. But still today, running Windows 11/Pro/64 I have the shortcut to Wordpad on my Task Bar. And I use it almost daily.

If I someday install Windows 12, and it does not include Wordpad, I'll miss it greatly, and probably use Lebre Office in stead.
Or, just copy the three Wordpad files from my Win-11 PC, and import them. I've already done that with 24H2. Works just fine.

An alternative third party 'low bloat' app (eg. Jarte, Notepad++)

A 'fully-fledged' Word processor (eg. MS Word (standalone), MS Word (365), LibreOffice Writer)

Look for something else on the Microsoft Store, should the need arise
