It won't tell you the "reader's" speed. That would be in the reader's specs.
But it will compare various SD cards plugged into the reader, or compare the reader with SD card, to say a USB port with USB stick.

I compared a USB stick to an SSD.
The SSD was hooked to a SATA III port on the motherboard, and the USB stick was hooked to a USB 3.2 port.

Thanks. So then your USB 3.2 is unexpectedly (to me) darn fast.

But can't I get a general idea without running tests? My aim is to know roughly which microSD card to buy, so that I'm fairly well matching the card to the reader.

That information will be in the specs.
That USB stick I bought said: 440MB/s

And it's easy to look up the USB 3.2 speed, USB port speeds are standardized.

Read mechanism
  • Standard: 12.5 MB/s
  • High-speed: 25 MB/s
  • UHS-I: 50 MB/s or 104 MB/s
  • UHS-II: 156 MB/s full-duplex, or 312 MB/s half-duplex
  • UHS-III: 312 MB/s full-duplex, or 624 MB/s half-duplex
  • Express: ≥ 985 MB/s full-duplex
Write mechanismSame as Read

Well, my first move was to look in Device Manager, but I don't see the card reader there.
The only reason I'd mentioned USB was because I was guessing that USB would be slower than a card reader, if the card reader is directly tied into the main Bus. [I can't seem to reply without it coming out in bold. Sorry. I'll wrestle with it tomorrow.]

Those speeds in post #4 are maximum expected speeds for various SD card types.
There will be slight variations due to manufacturing.

As for which type of SD card you have... it's usually written on the SD card.

If you look up your SD card on Amazon, it will generally list a speed.

As for the reader, find it's specs at Amazon or the manufacturer... it should also list which SD card speeds it can make use of.
