Not without some more data. Post a directory listing of your M: drive and a listing of the Reflect configuration that you used to make the image.

How many older images are on the backup drive?
How often are you backing up?
Are you creating Full & differential backups, just full backups or other?
Every new full backup will create a fresh image, older backups are not automatically deleted.

There was 1 older image of windows 10, I have since formatted the external drive and imaged the C drive again and this is the result?
Going forward i will be backing up once a week, choosing differential, does this sound ok? still getting the red bar inside MF.

A full backup of your C:\ drive is gonna be 114GB, at default compression settings.
You can only fit 7 full backups on that 1TB drive.

If you did a sector by sector backup (228GB)... you can only fit 4 on the 1TB drive.

And that's assuming the 1TB drive is empty.

What @dlross asked for was a screenshot of the M: drive open in file explorer.
So we can see what's actually ON that 1TB drive.

There, now the numbers are fixed.
Too early in my morning to do math. :-)

And @Bastet is also asking for a screenshot of the M:\ drive opened in File Explorer, and what settings you chose, here...

Image1.png

Macrium, at default settings, is set to Medium compression and Intelligent sector copy.
This would make a full backup of your C:\ drive 114GB.
At Medium compression and "Make an exact copy... a full backup would be 228GB.

A full backup of your C:\ drive is gonna be 188GB, at default compression settings.
You can only fit 4 full backups on that 1TB drive.

If you did a sector by sector backup... you can only fit 2 on the 1TB drive.
I only intend keeping two full backups and the rest will be differentials. Would this be ok?

I have a 5TB HDD & this can fill up quickly with a few full backups, their differentials & the incremental.
A 1TB will not be large enough for two full backups & their diffs.
Did you clean the drive using disk part before formatting or just format it? Is the drive formatted to exFAT, FAT or NTFS?

Macrium defaults to deleting the oldest full back up if there is less than 5GB of space left on the BU drive

Try this... delete all backups off of the 1TB drive. Then make a full backup of the C:\ drive... with these settings.
Then post a screenshot of Macrium Reflect again.

An empty 1TB drive has 931GB of space on it.
If you have other stuff on there... you will have less than 931GB.
The drive has nothing else on it.

Macrium defaults to deleting the oldest full back up if there is less than 5GB of space left on the BU drive
Thanks @CornishRattler. I don’t let it get that full as it’s easier to manually delete backups, especially if I wish to keep an older backup as I did when I upgraded to Win 11 - I kept Win 10 image just in case I needed it.

Try this... delete all backups off of the 1TB drive. Then make a full backup of the C:\ drive... with these settings.
Then post a screenshot of Macrium Reflect again.

Will I just format the 1TB drive?

No... just do what's in post #17

Then, if everything goes according to plan... your full backup of C:\ will be 115GB.
So if that happens (your backup is 115GB)... you can then set the Retention Rules, to "Keep 7 backups"
Then when it gets to 7 backups on the 1TB drive... it will delete the oldest one, when you go to make another backup.

It should take approx. 12 mins to make a full backup of C:\
Approx. same time, if you have to restore from a backup.

The 1TB drive will actually hold eight 115GB backups...
so we will set the Retention Rules at 7, so Macrium doesn't turn your 1TB drive RED. :)

Note: If there's stuff on your C:\ drive that you don't use... remove it.
The smaller the amount of data on your C:\ drive, the faster your backups will be.

I have approx. 38Gb on my C:\ drive, so my backups are only 19GB, and only take me about 2 minutes to make.
