Just thought I throw this out. When do think you'll do a new desktop build? I am retiring from military life in the Royal Canadian Navy, January 2024. So, I am going to build the ultimate desktop retirement gift to myself, with the best parts I can get.

After I retired, I had this thought too. I built a moderately powerful PC (a 2600k Sandy Bridge CPU) which served me well for six years - the longest I have ever kept one PC build (although there were the usual GPU and memory and peripheral upgrades during that time). Then I went for a Ryzen 1700 in 2017, because I was attracted by the multiple threads - I mainly do video editing, so that's important. The raw speed of that PC was hardly more than the old Intel. Then in 2019 I built the current PC. It really was the best/fastest I could afford (or justify) and absolutely felt like the best PC I had ever used. Since then I have upgraded the GPU and RAM.
I have noticed a vague stirring within myself to upgrade the MOBO and CPU again. However, I think I'll wait until the next iteration of Ryzen; at which time I will review the price/performance vs the latest Intel offerings. It is all rather self-indulgent - but fun.
I have little doubt that you will have built your ultimate desktop by now. I hope you will report back here on how you find it and any insights you might have regarding the hardware.

Well, I am actually retiring Sept 2023. Moved up my retirement from the military. I have been debating about upgrading my x570 platform to the R7 5800x3d. But the AM4 is a really a dead platform now. So, I think I'll upgrade to the next gen AM5 system. Depends on how Intel performance will be next year VS AMD'S offering compares. Really excited for the power of the GPU's that are coming out later this year. I think 4k gaming will be worth while. Have to do the wait and see I guess. Still got 15 months till retirement though 😂

Yes. They do say that there is never a perfect time to upgrade, because there's always something better just around the corner; but it does seem to me that just now it is worth waiting to see what the next AMD CPU can offer - and I have read that DDR5 currently gives a miniscule advantage over DDR4 which is at a significantly lower price, so it probably isn't worth upgrading the motherboard just for that at the moment.

@Ernimus Prime I have found in the past, some people just have to have to latest or the fasted and spend a fortune on replacing a perfectly good component with another better, newer or faster one only to find that the difference isn't noticeable. a made up example could be you buy the latest and fastest graphics card only to find no improvement as the CPU or memory are slowing things down, hence I upgrade with caution

I agree. When I do my next build late next year. I am planning on moving to 4k high refresh rate gaming monitor. Plus, my retirement present to myself will probably be my last build. So, I want the best I can get. After 21 years in the military. I think I will treat myself good. 😂

Sounds like a good plan, When I get a new PC I always get the best, fastest and latest I can and have found that works for me as it keeps me going for many years. I retired (early) nearly 3 years ago when lockdown hit the UK best thing I ever done so I am sure you will enjoy it

I very much doubt that you'll have a problem with Windows 12 compatibility with your current set up. I was reading only yesterday in "The Register" that Microsoft has been disappointed at the slow take-up of Windows 11 with (what El Reg describes as) its 'hardware requirements that made many windows 10 systems obselete'. I don't think they'll make that mistake again for a while.

Trouble is, it is all speculation so if I think 12 is worth upgrading to and I need to upgrade my pc to meet requirements I guess I will

That's usually what I do - incrementally upgrade the components as needed. Really, there's no need for a new build when you do that.

I know what you mean. It's almost a nuisance to have to crack open your system.

I think the next major thing I'll be doing is upgrading my case for better cooling. I will delay that as long as possible, though, since I'd have to take everything out of the old case and put it in the new one. Plus, I've not found a case I like. I'm not into all the lights and don't really want a transparent side. I also need at least two 5.25" front bays for my Blu-ray player, storage drawer, and a smaller one for my USB ports. Good boxes meeting my criteria seem to be getting more difficult to find.

I'll be waiting on the new box, though. My temps are a little high, but they're nowhere near the 90C threshold for the CPU.

Our household computer looks like it needs work done on it or replacing, Alienware aren't offering many options on new pc's anymore so if the ssd looks any more dodgy it could be a component replace
