Solved Why can't Windows 11 open or view HEIC files? How can I convert heic to jpg?

I recently encountered a very annoying thing! I took some photos with my phone in HEIC format, but after transferring them to a Windows 11 computer, I couldn't open them! Every time I clicked on the file, the computer always popped up an error message saying that the file could not be viewed. I checked and found that HEIC seems to be an Apple format, and Windows 11 itself does not support this format. What's worse is that some programs, such as Windows' default photo viewer, still can't recognize these files.

So, I started to think, how can I convert HEIC to JPG? I don't want to waste time on complicated conversion tools every time. What I want most is a simple and fast method that can convert batches with one click for easy editing and sharing. Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Can you share how to solve it? I hope to find a way that does not require additional installation and can be done directly on Windows 11. Thank you all for your suggestions!

You need to install the HEVC codec in Windows. You can find it in the Microsoft Store. :-)

I went through the whole conversion thing for a while and eventually changed my iphone camera setting to take photos in jpeg format so windows and email receipients could read them. Converting was a PITA.

This is a good approach, but what to do with the heic files before the camera settings were changed? There are almost 700 heic files on my computer, I need to convert heic to jpg on my Windows 11.

HEIC is a file format used by iPhone and Microsoft Windows does not support it. It is normal to see things work on Mac but not on Windows. It is better using a desktop heic to jpg converter for bulk conversion feature and safety. It is not alway safe to upload the photos to an unknown online service.

I just downloaded a couple of sample HEIC images and converted them using Faststone Image Viewer (freeware).
Under the menu Extra you can convert images in batch, so a whole folder at once.

Does it very fast and no images leave your system.

I did the converting test as well in Irfanview.
Same result, batch conversion possible as well under Irfanview Thumbnails.
I find Fastsone Image Viewer somewhat more comfortable to use, in Irfanview it's a bit more complicated.

Online converters are encrypted and take your file and convert it to the file format you want it to be so you can save it and then the algorithm deletes the uploaded original, so no one is going to be looking at your photos but you
