HI, I have been trying to update my Mom's Windows 11 Dell laptop to the latest Win 11 - it seems to have stopped updates, yet I know MSFT has been slow in sending out the update due to issues, so up to now I have not been concerned when WU said there were no updates available. Her laptop is on Win 11 21H2 22000.1098, she has never been updated to 22H2.

But today, I decided that there have been updates out and she still gets no updates, so I took the MSU standalone installer linked for KB5019509, 22621.675, and attempted to run it to install to the latest. It gives me the error message --

Windows 11 Standalone Installer
The update is not applicable to your computer.

I am running the x64 version of the installer too, not the ARM version (see below). What is wrong, and how can I update her laptop to the latest Win 11 22H2 appropriate for her laptop? Thanks!

If 22H2 is not offered through WU, you should just do an In-Place upgrade.
KB5019509 is just an update for those already on 22H2.

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

DISABLE non-Microsoft:
a) antivirus software
b) firewall software
c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Windows 11 ISO (use the 3rd option), and save the ISO to your desktop.
Download Windows 11
The ISO must be downloaded in the same language as you are using in Windows, to be able to keep your Programs and Files.

000000 Win 11 ISO.png

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

Are you still getting the Definition updates? I get one every day. I don't even know when it happens, but the history tells me that it did. If you getting those updates, WU is not broken. Not everyone gets the notice for updating to 22H2 at the same time. I received my notice for 22H2 on Sept 29 and have been running 22H2 ever since.

Note, 22H2 is not without it's issues.

Thanks for the detailed reply! I am a little concerned about this for her:

"The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations."

What kinds of things are examples of what will be lost? And, do you think everything is still normal in her updates and MS has just not released the 22H2 for her computer yet?

I just checked and yes, Definition updates are coming every day - so WU is ok! So maybe I should just wait, it sounds like things are working as they should and MS will still send out the update eventually...?

I keep File Explorer, pretty basic... I lose that after an In-Place upgrade, for example.
It resets itself to MS's vision...

Image1.png

I had the Taskbar icons on the left... it centered them... I just changed it back. Simple stuff.
There's registry patches for most of these things in the tutorials section.

Most other stuff remains the same.
We have tweaks for whatever MS seems to toss at us.
We can get things back... fairly easily.

The update is not applicable to your computer.
You're attempting to install an update which is not applicable to that build. The build number of the operating system is 22000.1098 yet the update you're trying to install is only applicable to the 22621 build. You need to install the feature update which will get you to 22H2.

Thanks @BlueRobot, when I look at the MS Update Catalog, they don't have version numbers, just KB numbers, and they are cumulative updates. Which update do I want? (see picture)

AH! That answers it. So only Insider builds are available for her? She is not on Release Preview/ Beta, or Dev build programs.

So only Insider builds are available for her?
No. Like @Ghot has said, you need to perform a in-place upgrade to 22H2 in order for the cumulative update you were trying to install to be applicable. Alternatively, you can check for updates via Windows Update and then install the feature update which should be offered to you.

The cumulative update build numbers and their respective KB numbers are available here - Windows 11 - release information

You're currently on the 22000 build so the latest cumulative update available for you is 22000.1100 (KB5020387). You were trying to install the latest cumulative update for 22621 (22H2) which is available through either performing an in-place upgrade or by installing the feature update which should be offered to you unless there is a safeguard hold in place or it just happens to not have been rolled out to your system yet.

Thanks @BlueRobot, that makes total sense. That was a very useful link, thanks for sharing it and I have bookmarked it for the future. I see how it works now! For now I'll try the update to 22000.1100, and then give it some time for 22H2 since there have been problems. I did check the registry and there do not appear to be any blocks of newer versions of Windows. And the security updates are coming daily, so WU seems fine.
