Having taken the advice I was given in that post, I assumed that setting up a second email account, this time a Gmail account, would be no problem. However, I'm disappointed to find that now Google isn't accepting my credentials for the Gmail account. When I get to the page where I'm supposed to confirm my Gmail email address, which is correct, pressing the Next button takes me to a new screen which gives me an HTTP 400 error where it complains about a malformed URL. (The URL at the top of that screen is extremely long and full of many apparent hashes so perhaps it's too long to be handled properly.)
I have no idea how to proceed so that I can get the Gmail account to work in Thunderbird.
This might be if your version of Thunderbird doesn't support two factor authentication (2FA). I have seen that with old versions of Microsoft Outlook (classic), such as Outlook 2010. Make sure you upgrade to the latest version of Thunderbird. Also check in settings if you need to manually enable 2FA. Also check your Google account settings if you must manually grant access to Thunderbird.

Since several months ago all Google accounts are 2FA. Google removed the setting to disable 2FA and let less secure applications connect to Gmail. This leaves old applications that don't support 2FA unable to receive emails. One example is Microsoft Outlook 2010.

With a gmail account, any 3rd party email app (such as Outlook, Thunderbird, etc) requires an app password. This password is entered into your email application rather than your gmail password.
To get an app password
In the top right, click Gear Icon. Select See all settings.
Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
If you want POP, In the "POP download" section, select Enable POP for all mail or Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on. (Note: imap should be on by default. If you want to use imap and it doesn’t work, turn it on here.)
At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.
Click 9 dots in upper right corner and select ACCOUNT from list of apps
Security tab – Make sure 2-step verification is on. Once it is “APP Password” may show underneath it. If it does, generate a password to use in whatever mail app you are going to use. If it does not go here to generate a 16 digit password for your mail app. Account settings: Your browser is not supported.
Manually set up your email account in your mail app. Rather than using your normal gmail password, replace it with the password generated in step 6.Do not include the spaces.
That’s true! Get the latest version of Thunderbird.
I am presently using eM Client which has replaced Thunderbird on my laptops. Great email client and it supports two-factor authentication. Yahoo, Gmail, Outlook, etc.
