My Dell XPS 8940 (WIN 11 Home) slowed to a crawl a few days ago (March 20, 2022), after working fine for a month. By a crawl, I mean that when I put the cursor over taskbar icons like the Start button, or Windows Explorer or any program like MS Word, nothing happened for about one minute. The task manager showed several programs, including Windows Explorer, Microsoft Windows Search Indexer and OneDrive had Very High Power usage. When I ended tasks for Search Indexer and OneDrive, the system ran as fast as normal. So I stopped the Starup of the two programs, and now the system runs normally MOST OF THE TIME. But sometimes, e.g., when I open an image, it Power usage gets very high and the system slows down for a few minutes. When I open the OneDrive folder manually, the Windows Explorer power usage jumps to over 20% and then Explorer shuts down and task bar disappears.
There’s something wrong with my system. I didn’t have this problem the first month that I had the machine (Feb 2022). Then I turned off the machine, went out of town and re-started it 19 March. There were several Windows Updates, then the problems began.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions how to diagnose the problem? Background: I purchase a newDell XPS 8940 on 19 Jan 2022 with WIN 11 home. I’m running Malwarebytes and customized with: Open-Shell, WinaeroTweaker and ExplorerPatcher

Look in your update history. Did an update apply on or around 3/20? if so, make note of the update number. Uninstall it. Be sure to pause updates before you remove it or it will reapply again. Restart the computer and see if you solve the problem. If it did, you can keep it from reapplying for up to 60 days while you research if the same update caused issues for others or if MS fixes it.

On 3/21, I did a restore to 3/19, but the problem was still there.

You undid a windows update with a system restore? Why did you not just uninstall it? More than likely, it immediately reinstalled again. Perform the steps in post #4 to get rid of that update long enough that you can adequately test. Also download Malwarebytes and run a full system scan. Quarantine everything it finds. This is the free 14 day trial of the Pro version but it will revert to the free version after 14 days. Malwarebytes Cybersecurity for Home and Business | Anti-Malware & Antivirus

First, nothing has changed in my original sign in (IRWIN), except I got an 'error: 38' that my WordPerfect Office files have been damaged . . .

Could that be to a service I disabled for the Clean Boot? I never went back and change anything in MSCONFIG.EXE

Second, the Test sign in ran slowly as well, mainly because the search Indexer was running.
Both sign-ins had Power usage Very High for Search Indexer and Windows Explorer, which was my original problem. [I haven't opened OneDrive to see what that does.

If this computer is only 2 months old, you can open Dell Support Assist, troubleshooting tab-there you can run tests on your hardware and troubleshoot specific issues, slowdown being one of them.

There you can also reset it to factory default. -click 'erase everything and reset PC to original state'. It will recover to the state it was in when you took it out of the box. Backup any files you might have created first. You will have to re-install any apps you added.

OK. The error: 38' problem with WordPerfect Office files was because I didn't finish Brink's 'clean boot instructions' I didn't enable all services and selected startups. Now it looks like all my installed programs work. The system is still slow (it takes 5 - 10 sec to open the 'Start' button and Windows Explorer button). But that SEEMS to be due to the Very High Power usage of Search Index (10%) and Windows Explorer (12%). So it looks like I'm back where I was. I'll see if the system speeds up once the Indexing is complete -- as of now, it's on PAUSE and I can't get it going.

Open administrative Powershell PS and type or copy and paste:

msdt.exe -id SearchDiagnostic
get-computerrestorepoint

Consider performing any of these if problems continue:

1) restoring a backup image if there is one

2) System restore

3) performing an in place upgrade repair

If an in place upgrade repair fails to improve the performance then consider:

a) reset save files

d) clean install

If you do not have a backup image you can clean install Windows 11 and start making free backup images:

If this computer is only 2 months old, you can open Dell Support Assist, troubleshooting tab-there you can run tests on your hardware and troubleshoot specific issues, slowdown being one of them.

There you can also reset it to factory default. -click 'erase everything and reset PC to original state'. It will recover to the state it was in when you took it out of the box. Backup any files you might have created first. You will have to re-install any apps you added.
Thanks for suggesting Dell Support Assist. There was a problem with a driver, and they are fixing it as I type.
As to resetting to original state, if I can't get the search indexer and explorer to settle down, I'll have to do that. We'll see. Thanks Glasskuter.

3) performing an in place upgrade repair
zbook. I ran ‘an in place upgrade repair’ from a USB WIN 11 boot disk. It worked! PC running fast, indexing fast, with no power usage above normal. Win 11 Restarts in under 1 minute. Whew! I was about to do a clean install. Thanks so much for the suggestion.

That's the first thing I did; I made a Macrium restore of the drive. Next, I did a restore point.

I just had to reinstall completely and added back only the essential Apps and settings changes I really needed, hence I am done patching my system and installing themes and icon packs etc. My PC was a snail. When I booted up it wouldnt even connect to the internet for about 5 minutes. After reinstall when I press my power button it literally takes about 20 seconds to load to my Desktop..amazing and everything else is snappy as hell
