Win 11 won't default to media player for cda files

Win 11
I have been using the Win 11 media player to rip CDs for my son. Somehow iTunes is the default now. After this happened, I went to a .cda file in File Explorer and right clicked on Media Player to be the default. Then it displayed it as the default as I wanted. The next time I input a CD, iTunes, again, appeared. I have to close iTunes each time then right click on one of the cda files on the CD in Win Explorer to get it to work right.

I am running the latest version of Win 11 on an HP laptop with an external CD player/reader. Is there a work around for this or do I need to delete iTunes from my computer? I rarely use it anymore since Apple pretty much crippled its features.

Thanks for your quick suggestions.

I have tried both suggestions and this is what shows in settings. Sadly, iTunes still comes up once a new CD is inserted into the CD drive. :(

Go in the iTunes preferences (menu edit -> preferences) and then select the Advanced tab. there you can check the box called "Use iTunes as the default player for audio files".

Scroll down to Option Two in this tutorial

See if you can set to media player.

I have tried some of the tips in the tutorial. Thanks for sending them. That said, I seem to have backed myself into a corner. Win 11 Media Player is unable to read my CDs. I have to figure that one out.

If the audio CDs are commercial products the files on the files on the discs will show in File Explorer with the extension of .cda and be about 1MB in size but the View, Options of File Explorer must be unchecked to Unhide the extensions. I've not had issues with using Open with and choosing the older Windows Media Player, newer Media Player or VLC.

Open search (Win+S) & search for Control Panel
Open Control Panel
Find AutoPlay (If you can't see it you can search for it in top right of control panel)
Scroll down to CDs
Select Media player for Audio CD's
Select Media Player for Enhanced Audio CD's
Click Save at the bottom

You can select "Media Player" (New music app) or “Windows Media Player” (Old music app). They are two different Windows apps.

See how you go.

Thanks I appreciate your taking the time to set up pictures of where to go, what to do.

I had set up the Control Panel as you indicated earlier, but it did not solve my problem. Further research led me to a troubleshooter which when I used it I was directed to the Win 11 media player settings to do a reset. I could not find any reset in the settings, but did find a "refresh" choice. So I did the refresh and, for 3 different CDs it read them. I included a screen shot of how I have the AutoPlay currently set up.

I say for the moment as I may not be done yet, but for now I will go with it. After doing a number of things I never know which or a combination of them did the trick. As an elder operator it is a bit frustrating.

Having that setting in the screenshot you show is fine.

And it sounds like you’ve had some success with having a CD play when you insert it. 👏👍
This should stand true as long as you have the settings in the screenshots I provided in post number 10 above for Audio CD and Enhanced Audio CD

Your screenshot above”
“Music - Open File Explorer to view files”
The setting you show stands true when inserting something like a USB stick with random music like MP3 files. But a USB when inserted should just open in File Explorer regardless, if the settings are set correctly.

Keep us informed, let us know if you face problems 🙏

I will be getting another load of CDs from my son to transfer soon. So, in a couple of days, I may try resetting the Control Panel parameter your recommendation to see if I can get back on track [pun intended :)].

I will be getting another load of CDs from my son to transfer soon. So, in a couple of days, I may try resetting the Control Panel parameter your recommendation to see if I can get back on track [pun intended :)].

Hi, what do you mean resetting? Didn’t you just set them to open with Media Player, saved it and moved on? What is it you’re doing?
I’m finding it hard to follow where you’re at.

The setting you show stands true when inserting something like a USB stick with random music like MP3 files. But a USB when inserted should just open in File Explorer regardless, if the settings are set correctly."

I have not reset it as I understood YOUR suggestion as follows:

Thanks for the AnyBurn tip. I tried it and had problems with it. That said, my Win 11 Media Player is working well so I am good with that.
